As the novel begins present day, we hear from a granddaughter and grandmother while visiting in the lovely garden, pulling weeds, (symbols for people in our lives-everything belongs). Readers then hear a tragic and heartbreaking story, told from the loving grandmother; her story, how she met the love of her life- as events unfold, which changed her life. As an escape from all the troubles in her life, Tina volunteers in a charity shop whenever she is not at work. It is while working at this shop that she comes across a letter in an old coat. The letter was still unopened, and Tina’s curiosity pushes her to read it. This letter marks the start of an adventure that will bring strangers together. The letter, one of love, reveals how an evil man prevented a young woman from spending her life with the man she loved or a chance to raise their baby together. This letter also puts Tina’s life in danger when her husband stumbles on it and beats her accusing his pregnant wife of infidelity. Even though this subject is often predictable with its indiscriminate apportioning of pain and heartache...still each story has its own unique experiences...this is one such story.

The Letter by Kathryn Hughes is both beautifully written and incredibly poignant. You cannot fail to fall for this story. There is so much emotion written into the story that it carries you along and you just want to see a happy ending. So is there a happy ending. You will discover for yourself in a book that I am delighted to highly recommend. Which scenes stood out in your mind?The Letter is a historical romance story of love found and lost. Although the story is nothing new, the way it is told makes it outstanding. We see how the two women learn to cope with the challenges that life throws their way. Some of the decisions are at times wrong, but it is admirable that they keep on pushing. The first storyline unravels just before WWII, and the author paints a perfect picture of the happenings during this period. If you are looking for an easy read with great characters, a solid plot, and a captivating storyline, this novel is ideal. Read all your books. Absolutely love all of them. The story starts with Tina who works in a charity shop and comes across a letter dated many years before. Intrigued by the people and the story behind the letter Tina sets out to find the person who the letter was intended for. The story then swaps between present day with Tina and her troublesome marriage and years before where the story of the people behind the letter unfolds.
