About this deal

Life goes on, until one day, before Christmas, he meets Gabe, a homeless man - the good ghost from the tale - that changes his cosmos completely.... Despite the book being set at Christmas, this really has no impact on the story at all. It is used to hammer home the moral message; Christmas is a time for forgiveness and to be with your family. So the yuletide theme should not put any readers off reading it at any time during the year, as the moral tone stands alone. The fear was there; it was there all the time, but it was merely disguised as something else for others to see.” Alice sees things differently and it affects how she lives. This book follows her story as she adjusts and comes to know herself. Outside his building he sees a homeless man called Gabe. Something about him makes Lou stop and chat to him. Then he offers Gabe a job in the post room.

Summary and reviews of The Gift by Cecelia Ahern - BookBrowse

Thank you NetGalley and Harper Collins for a digital review copy of this wonderful book in exchange for an honest review. A story that will make you stop and think more times that I have wanted honestly. It’s all about kindness, acceptance of our different abilities in life and most of all , the fear of not actually firing in a mood that this society is so set upon and likes to put everyone in a box.

I haven't read anything by Cecila Ahern for quite some time, but when I saw this on Netgalley, I had to request a copy. Thank you to them and Harper Collins for the ARC in exchange for an honest review. I was gonna post this on the night of 25th, right when I finished the book (literally eating it up in one setting), but the internet is flimsy here right now due to political reasons. This story is about people, secrets and time.About people who, not unlike parcels, hide secrets, who cover themselves with layers until they present themselves to the right ones who can unwrap them and see inside.” As Alice matures she searches for her own place in life, with a career and a home of her own. She tries to come to grips with her synesthesia and learns different coping mechanisms. This is an uplifting tale of people coping with different problems (for example, Alice's best friend from school has Tourette's syndrome) and managing to succeed.

The story was a little extraordinary but I’m not complaining about that. The ending did feel like I was being preached too, but I guess the point was a good one to make. I think you could probably cut all that out and people would still get the message. Because that what this whole story is about, delivering a message. The book's opening is not particularly gripping, especially if compared to Cecelia's previous books which have much stronger first chapters in them. The novel features a story within a story, and starts with a fourteen-year-old boy throwing a turkey through his fathers living room window on Christmas morning as he watches him enjoy the day with his new family. He is then taken to a police station where the officer there tells him Lou's story, in a bid to teach him a lesson.Cecelia has a rare talent. One that has the ability to draw the reader in without them really knowing it. There isn't a plot as such, it is a story of Alice’s life, but you can't help but be drawn to her and knowing you can't give her a hug (it's too much for her to cope with) I felt protective of her. Anyone having had a toxic parent will sympathise and understand her conflict let alone with the confusion and disruption of colours as she was growing up. A wonderful, poignant at times, emotive story and one that left me with a tear. To quote Oscar Wilde “ Mere colour, unspoiled by meaning and unallied with definite form, can speak to the soul in a thousand different ways”. Stunning Beautiful, moving and unexpected, In a Thousand Different ways is an unforgettable story. This is Cecelia Ahern at her very best’ Louise O’Neill This book is special. Cecelia Ahern writes in such a descriptive and evocative way. The feelings and moods she describes are visceral. Beyond that, the reader is presented with a unique premise with which to digest not only human behaviour but mental health. I loved reading about Alice's journey and was captivated by her colourful insights into the people she met. 'One by one and all at once, I have seen and felt, All the colours of living.' I highly recommend this book. Her books are wonderful. They deal with serious issues and serious problems. Real-life, every day shit. She also throws in a little bit of magic and intrigue. Her books have this creepy, eerie effect that I love. And most importantly they are not stupidly and hopelessly romantic in any way. *Insert cheers and applause here* I loved the beginning how it starts off on one story that I thought the book was about but ends up being taking you down a whole different route.

This sounds like a good book Anne. Audible is on my list of things to try this year. I know quite a few who use it and they all say how good it is. I finished this 2 minutes ago and tears are still streaming down my face!! And I so rarely cry at books !! From her extraordinarily difficult childhood, we follow Alice throughout her life, dealing with her strange gift which she cannot describe, therefore nobody can understand, and consequently has her labelled a troublemaker. Relationships with her siblings and her mother are complicated. Her school days are fraught with problems due to her condition preventing her from making friends, until she finds people she can relate to in a special school, just one of many breakthrough moments in the story.

The Gift

I was over the moon when I got a copy of cecelia book as I'm huge fan of hers. I just love how she really has thought outside the box with the story well she dose with all books but this one blow me away . She really knows how to make you feel so much emotion with this story . This isn't a light read, rather one that makes you sit and reflect upon it as you go through it. Alice develops the ability to see people's emotions as auras and how this interacts between different people. She struggles with her mother, who is later diagnosed as bipolar, and younger brother, but is supported by her older brother. The story follows Alice through her life and the detrimental effect that her ability has on her interactions with others. This is a book about love, trust, mysticism, family, acceptance, humanity, compassion and so much more The interesting thing about this book is that the protagonist is not necessarily likeable and can be difficult to empathize with, yet we, as a reader, find ourselves willing him to succeed in improving himself. Personally, I continued to dislike Lou throughout the full book, and yet I found myself completely invested in him, and found I was rooting for him for his family’s sake rather than his. The Gift really makes you take a look at your priorities and think about what's really important. Making something of yourself at the cost of everyone around you or trying to be there and cherish the people you love.
