About this deal

The rear does suddenly become chunkier a few inches in from those super-svelte edges, but even then the set wears this extra area of bulk quite nicely. The chunkier area doesn’t just house the screen’s processors and connections; it also provides space for TCL to build in a strikingly large rear-facing bass driver – again adorned by the Onkyo logo. Perhaps as a result of TCL’s efforts to keep the clouding so faint and vague, though, it can sometimes spread further away from the edges of a particularly bright object than we might have anticipated from a TV that has 576 dimming zones at its disposal. Having said that, the resulting sometimes slightly misty-looking pictures are far less likely to distract you than smaller but brighter and more defined areas of blooming would. We are reviewing the 55-inch version of the TCL C735 and given other screen sizes use similar panels, performance should be reasonably similar, but we cannot guarantee that will be the case given the usual differences in LCD panel to panel. Particularly welcome is how well the sound swells forward and out from the built-in soundbar. This provides far more impact and detail than the more ‘swallowed’ effect you typically get with TVs that house all their speakers behind their screens.

The 55C735K’s connections extend to four HDMIs in total, a single USB 2.0 port, an Ethernet port, a 3.5mm headphone port, an optical digital audio output, and wi-fi. With advanced Hands-Free voice control combined to Google Assistant, TCL's Android TV makes life smart and simple. A dedicated gaming onscreen menu, meanwhile, provides a helpful combination of signal information and game-specific features that include an Aiming Aid, multiple game picture presets, and the facility to adjust the brightness of dark parts of the picture without overcooking the brightness elsewhere. While QLED means “Quantum Light Emitting Diodes“ which with the application of phosphorescent crystals gives bright and vibrant colors, improving the overall experience.

There are a number of unusual elements to the 65C815K’s reasonably attractive design. First, it features a very obvious, blue-tinted soundbar hanging from its bottom edge. This wears the branding of renowned Japanese audio brand Onkyo, raising hopes this might be the rarest of things: an affordable TV with a built-in sound system that doesn’t sound horrible. The C845K’s so-called Game Master Pro 2.0 system provides VRR support too, in the AMD FreeSync and ‘basic’ HDMI flavours, as well as ALLM switching so the TV will always turn to its fast-response Game mode when a game source is detected. Dolby VisionTM and Dolby AtmosTM bring the life-like picture and sound straight to your living room The TCL C745 uses a pair of downward-firing full-range speakers, each of which has 15W of built-in amplification. The sound quality is reasonably good considering the TV’s dimensions and screen size, with a clean delivery, some nice detail, and a degree of stereo separation. However, there’s little in the way of bass extension, and the audio can sound strained at higher volumes. The 55C735K marks a watershed moment for TCL’s fortunes in the European market as it finally sees the brand managing to combine a feature count that embarrasses many much more expensive TVs with some properly decent picture and sound quality. All at a price that will have more established rivals quaking in their boots.

Again, brightness alone doesn’t guarantee picture quality. In conjunction, though, with the C845K’s high dimming zone count and the fact that it uses Quantum Dots to deliver high-volume colours capable of capitalising on all that claimed brightness (TCL claims coverage of 97 per cent of the digital cinema DCI-P3 spectrum), we can’t help but at least hope that the 65C845K is going to do something pretty groundbreaking for its price point. In fact, the 55C735K even supports the Dolby Vision IQ system, where the advanced Dolby Vision picture settings can automatically adjust themselves to compensate for the amount of ambient light in your room so that you still get the right level of HDR impact. The TCL C745 sits towards the top of the brand’s 4K HDR lineup, offering most of the benefits associated with a modern smart TV, while also keeping gamers happy by including all the bells and whistles needed to get the most out of the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X.

Thanks to a winning combination of aggressive pricing and increasingly acclaimed performance, TCL has in recent times risen from pretty much nowhere to rivalling the likes of Samsung and LG with the number of TVs it shifts each year. The TCL 65C735K 65’’ QLED 4K HDR Smart TV is an excellent choice for an immersive viewing experience. Its 65-inch 4K QLED display and HDR technology provide an extensive range of colours and contrast, giving you an unforgettable viewing experience. This Smart TV also offers a wide range of streaming services, allowing easy access to your favourite shows and movies. The TCL 65C735K 65" QLED 4K HDR Smart TV is an excellent choice for anyone looking to upgrade their home entertainment setup. Upscaling of sub-4K content is solid, although not the sharpest and with an element of noise. I don’t think it’s worth changing the Noise Reduction levels, however; the Auto setting looks too smooth and blurry. Fine detail can be a touch soft, depending on what you’re watching, but the TCL puts in a satisfying image.

When first detecting an HDR10 signal, the TV defaults to IMAX for some reason, but we’d recommend switching to the more accurate Movie picture mode, which offers an extensive choice of picture controls. One of these settings is Dynamic Tone Mapping, and while there’s a choice of options, the default balance setting appears to deliver the best overall performance.

The 55-inch 55C735K, though, finally fixes this frustration, at least for the UK and Europe, combining an unprecedented feature count for its money with picture quality that shames some TVs costing twice as much. Price TCL has unveiled a number of new home entertainment products aimed at its European consumers for the first half of 2022, including two new series of Mini LED TVs and two QLED ranges, along with a fresh trio of soundbars. When moving on to actual viewing material, the C745 continued to impress, rendering the fine detail in native 4K content with commendable skill. The tone mapping was also impressive with HDR10, and even better when dealing with HDR10+ and Dolby Vision. Since all streamers use one of these formats (mainly the latter), as do a lot of 4K Blu-rays, this TV has you covered. Android TVTM with Google AssistantTM built-in provides access to your favourite streaming services, apps and gamesWhile TV designs typically seem keen to crow about keeping speakers hidden away as if they’re some sort of dirty secret, personally I have no problem with the TCL’s public display of sound-quality affection.
