But, they both offer a good picture quality for the price. Our thumbs are raised. The C717 is bold and bright, offering reassuringly crisp definition and vibrant hues, much as we’d expect to see from a QLED display. In terms of off-axis viewing angles, you pretty much only want to watch this TV head-on. The 5-Series does a slightly better job retaining color saturation off-axis than some of its rivals like last year’s Vizio V-Series, but anything more than a few degrees severely degrades the fidelity of the image. TCL is top-tier screen maker with impressive technical resources, but until now we’ve only seen budget tellies from the brand. With the C715 QLED, it’s starting to flex its muscles.

Image presets include Low Power, and Smart HDR which lends an HDR-like lift to SDR content. The latter is effectively the Standard default, suitable for most shows. The step-down QLED model carries similar features to the C81 but doesn’t have a design as fancy nor does it come with an integrated 2.1 soundbar. The feet are adjustable to fit different spaces (wide and narrow configurations), with a slim bezel and use of premium metal in the construction of the chassis for an elegant and durable build quality. The 50-inch model doesn’t have the adjustable feet. Apply all picture mode: Select whether to apply the picture settings to the current source or to all sources. Press ▲/▼ to select an option and then press OK. The channel menus are used to scan and maintain your channels, and access the Electronic Program Guide. The channel menus are only available in TV mode. Roku also has the option of installing a remote app that allows you to do a bunch of things. Basically, it can do anything that a smart remote can, from turning your TV on and off to listening to sound on the headphones of your device on which the app is installed.We also rather like the C715’s 4K SDR and HD performance. There’s a chirpy vibrancy to its images, particularly with well lit dramas. When it comes to gaming, both integrated sound solutions are excellent. But somehow, Hisense is one step ahead of TCL. Hisense TVs provide more detailed and efficient sound. For example, while playing games, you can hear the clear sound of footsteps and weapons. In fact, the only problems we’ve had with the TV’s performance are with its motion processing (some judder on medium settings) and its upscaling – especially when feeding it HD or sub-HD content. Watching the new Masters of the Universe animated show on Netflix had serious issues with its motion until we simply turned off the motion processing from the menu, while HD shows like Kim’s Convenience looked more like a decent 4K image rather than a beautifully upscaled 8K image.
