Full marks for this book. It's a beautiful insight to the lives of street children in the 1800s. I first read this in my last year of junior school as a part of studying History, it helped me realise that the cruel lives of Victorian children aren't just distant stories made up to make kids appreciate what they got, but they were reality for children. They will use the grid in the resource to plan what will happen to the two sisters as they are forced to leave the big house because the housekeeper panics… Overall, I liked the book. Even though it gave me the creeps. But it still doesn't make it to my favourites shelf because it gives me the creeps.

Jim reminds me of Oliver from Oliver Twist. Even though he's a little more brave and doesn't trust anybody. But the situations were almost same. I couldn't help comparing the two. And I know that Oliver Twist is a classic and this is not but that really didn't matter to me. But something about it doens't seem right. I mean, Jim was always potrayed as a hero and literaly never made a wrong step. But it wasn't much of a problem so I have no idea why it's bothering me. Notice how the descriptions and pace alter from noise, voices and movement before Jim enters the workhouse, to silent images and slow actions once inside. Provide headings: Sights; Sounds; Actions; Feelings; and find descriptions for each aspect. Street Child is my bestselling novel based on the story of Jim Jarvis, who alerted Dr Barnardo to the plight of destitute children in Victorian London. After escaping from a workhouse, his adventures and hardships finally led him to attend a Ragged School, where Barnardo asked him for his story. A gripping book that doesn't shy away from the brutal reality of life for a lower class Victorian child. There are some topics about death that may have to be dealt with more carefully. At the end of Chapter Eleven, Rosie lies to Jim and tells him that his sisters Emily and Lizzie went to live in the countryside in a summer house with a grey-eyed lady. Street Child ends with Emily and Lizzie wanting to tell their story from the moment their ma leaves them in the care of Rosie at the big house. In Street Child, Jim tells Dr Barnardo his life story. But he couldn’t possibly tell it all in one go, or Dr Barnardo would have fallen asleep! So let’s pretend that you are Jim, sitting on a stool by a lovely warm fire, and you’re telling your story in real time (rather than novel time). I walked round the streets of London and along the river Thames, read a lot, took photographs, and tried to imagine it all as it must have been a long time ago. That’s the writer’s job. I need to make myself familiar with the place where my stories are set, so it will seem familiar to the reader too. this book is very appealing to children all around the world gets a bit boring but twords the end it gets very exciting AHard to say. Church charities were more alert to the problems of girls on the streets than they were of boys, so they might well have been taken in to an existing Home and possibly put into service when they were older. Later, Barnardo found a way of including girls in his Homes. Otherwise, I think it may have been the workhouse for them. In Far From Home I try to imagine what might have happened to Emily and Lizzie.

This is the story of Jim Jarvis, a boy who is orphaned and forced to work in an East London workhouse. Eventually, fearing that his whole life will be spent in the workhouse, Jim decides to escape. The rest of the book follows his journey through London. During this time he tries to find his sisters (who he was separated from when he was put in the workhouse), works for a cruel and abusive man on a coal boat and lives as a ‘street child.’ It is during his time on the streets that he meets Barney (Dr. Barnardo). With the help of Barney Jim is given a second chance as a Barnardo’s child. I feel sorry for Jim and shrimps pluis tip because there having a hard time but i want to know what happens to Tip and Rosie Plus Emily and Lizze This activity focuses on chapter four, ‘The Workhouse’. This activity can linked to the activity Street Child, the play, which looks at the play adaptation of the story and compares it to the novel. Before readingI think it was amazing the saddest thing were when jims mother had died and when Jim friend shrimps had died too.
