For his latest Disney animation, Moana director Don Hall has created a wonderfully surreal subterranean land that looks like something that might have been dreamed up by Jules Verne, all DayGlo-pink blobby bonkersness. It’s a strange world populated by weird creatures: shoals of fish flying through the air and an enormous critter that’s a cross between a dinosaur and a jellyfish. The human characters aren’t half bad either: a family of gung-ho explorers. Shame, then, about the environmentally themed plot, which is so tangled it would take the entire Royal Geographical Society a decade to map out. That might be an interesting dynamic to explore in a different movie, but Strange World has a cooler story with higher, more pressing stakes going on, and a limited run time to let it play out. Admittedly, there are some touching scenes between each father-son pair. One of the best ones involves Ethan roping his dad and grandfather into his favorite card game, a sort of Settlers of Catan-inspired strategy game that heavily parallels their current expedition. With more nuance and novelty, these relationships could be something new, but the “Sad Because Dad Left to Explore” trope is already overused in science fiction movies like Interstellar, Ad Astra, and Armageddon. And in Strange World, the storyline resolves itself in the most obvious way. just as rewarding on a second watch and looking for all of those clues as it is on a first where the scope of story and animation greatness cannot help
