A potato cannon is NOT considered a Firearm in the US, but it IS considered one here?I know, Gun Laws in the US are much, much less strict than they are here in the UK, and fair enough if governments have different considerations - but if a Potato Cannon is NOT considered a Firearm in the US, WHY is it in the UK? Getting shot in the head with an air rifle would easily penetrate the skull. Getting hit with a potato would be seriously dangerous and hurt but will not kill. Steel: The very high-pressure rating of steel piping makes it a familiar sight on high-powered hybrid cannons. It is however much more expensive than any other common piping material. The extra weight and joining difficulties are also a consideration. So of you get yourself a cronograph.... determine the mass of your projectile you can calculate your energy at muzzle tune it till you get around 11.5 Foot Lbs with a barrel lengh over 16 inches then that's just an air rifle,, it you want to go shorter than 16 inch then your muzzel energy must drop to under 6 foot pounds! ok? In Germany, a spud gun does not differ legally from any other firearm (for ones that use combustion to propel the projectile) or air rifle. The manufacture, acquisition and possession is therefore subject to the same requirements as for any other weapon of the same category. Since there is no known model developed before 1871, which would classify that model as an antique, spud guns are not subject to the eased regulations regarding antique weapons. Therefore any non-combusting spud gun with a maximum projectile energy of 7.5 joules can be owned by anyone without a license, while their manufacture still requires one. The legal possession of any other such weapon requires a gun license. The potato cannon can trace its origin to the World War II-era Holman Projector, which was a shipboard anti-aircraft weapon. [7] Launcher types [ edit ]Once again, thanks for the response all. I suppose selling them and firing them on say, a football field is out of the question all together! jimmy163 wrote:Does anyone know of anyone who has ever been arrested in the UK for owning or using a combustion cannon? Promotional sports cannons: Portable pneumatic cannons which run on bottled CO 2 are common at large sports games in the U.S. where they are used to project items such as T-shirts or wrapped food into the audience. Such cannons can be dangerous: the Phillie Phanatic injured a fan with a hot dog cannon in June 2018. [24] Such "air cannons", as they are often called, tend to be made of higher-quality materials than an average pneumatic spudgun, but they use the same methods of operation. It is also illegal to discharge any firearm within a certain (not many feet) distance from the highway. Possession of Section 5 is illegal, and certificates (for all practical purposes) do not exist - minimum sentencing standards are 5 years.

Soldering: commonly used in the construction of copper pipe based spudguns, a solder with a lower melting point than the copper is melted and drawn into the gaps between pipe and fitting with capillary action, holding to pipe and fitting with a wetting action before hardening.

Spud Guns & Dart Guns

In Iron Man 3, Tony meets a boy named Harley, who owns a potato gun which he uses to threaten Tony. At the end of the movie, as thanks for his help, Tony builds Harley a newer and better potato gun. New stuff". The Spudgun Technology Center. 14 January 2010 [6 July 2002] . Retrieved 16 August 2011. Bird scarers: these devices are essentially automatic combustion cannons. They require bottled propane gas and a lead-acid battery. At intervals they ignite a propane/air mix to produce a loud explosion (up to 150 decibels close to the device [ This is not how sound pressure level is measured, clarification needed]) to scare birds from crop fields or near airport runways.

Another reason I asked is because I've seen the people who host 'Brainiac' on Sky One fire a potato cannon in a huge field (which was completely empty, though houses WERE indeed nearby). Me and a few friends have recently built a potato cannon (or 'spud gun' or 'spudzooka'). A potato cannon is usually made out of PVC (Drainage) Pipe, a potato is rammed down the long end (the barrel), some hairspry (or deodrant) is sprayed into a large barrel (the combustion chamber) , it's sparked using a sparker of any kind, and the potato goes flying. Gluing: the use of epoxy resin in small designs is common for the making of custom parts but it is rare to see glues used for structural connections. Epoxy resin is mostly used in applications where normal fittings would limit the possibilities. The ATF has previously examined potato guns or spud guns as devices using potatoes as projectiles and used solely for recreational purposes, do not meet the criteria of a destructive device defined by the National Firearms Act, or the Gun Control Act. They have however classified said guns as destructive devices when they used incendiary tennis balls. Combustion launchers are usually less powerful than their pneumatic or hybrid counterparts, especially when hairspray / alcohol is used as a propellant. Bottled oxygen can be added to the firing chamber, though this can cause an explosion of the pipe when firing, potentially injuring anyone nearby. The Simpsons character Maude Flanders was killed by air-cannon launched T-shirts in the eleventh season episode, " Alone Again, Natura-Diddily". Solvent welding: used for similar plastic connections using solvent fittings, the solvent temporarily dissolves the polymer chains of the plastic and the parts to be joined are brought together. On rehardening, the polymer chains from each part are entangled and so form a solid weld. [19] While combustion cannons may be legal in a given area, stun guns, sometimes used for ignition, are illegal in some states. [4]
