About this deal

On law and ethics – well I hope Dom writes that book someday because our broken moral compass continues to wreak havoc in the very fabric of society and the family nucleus. While trust between individuals is what ultimately holds society together, the law is meant to uphold truth and justice. Justice should be ‘blind’. But sadly professional ethics remains a hindrance to biased and prejudiced attorneys, advocates and especially (female, feminist) judges – who must 'win' at all costs, in the name of social justice. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion, but not their own facts. As quoted from Lord Jeffrey: “Opinions founded on prejudice are always sustained with the greatest of violence”. How tragic, especially in family law. Her journey takes her deep into feminist philosophies as she struggles to understand the unfolding media- driven drama of the Oscar Pistorius trial while researching issues of ethics in the legal profession. A conversation at Tim Horton's (a coffee shop) begins the story of a couple looking to buy a ranch in the Chilcotin region of British Columbia. Then the landscape takes over and the first chapter becomes a beautiful description of the expanse of land. It helps to ground readers in place and introduces one of the forms of silence explored in Somewhere In-Between. This particular silence is an appreciation of the surroundings: the old-growth forest, the willow-lined creek and "a haze of coastal mountains."

Despite it all though the one responsible for her death remains a mystery, glimpses of hidden hate within the characters belying an ending that tears the heart out and leaves it in tatters. Hosmer's ability to touch on real family drama and what one will endure for the sake of their children, paints life into these ordinary people who could live down the street from any one of us. urn:lcp:somewhereinbetwe0000gill_c2q8:epub:588645a7-e475-4f49-9e6e-d51a0b44c79f Foldoutcount 0 Identifier somewhereinbetwe0000gill_c2q8 Identifier-ark ark:/13960/t8md8tx4q Invoice 1652 Isbn 9780340923511 I’d like to start off by saying that I am a tremendous fan of the author. Her first two books blew me away with her exceptional and brilliant story telling ability. This also applies to Somewhere In Between in regards to her skills as an author. And I can’t say enough about the narration by Erica Maity. It was flawless perfection! Hosmer creates believable characters in relatable situations. She carefully guides the reader through a labyrinth of clues, characters and chaos, and gives the reader plenty of chances to cheer, cry, laugh, and loathe.

TW: SA, domestic abuse, depression, self harm, and likely a few others. Please be aware before reading the book. Loved it! This book was well written, with true to life experiences of one woman reliving her past to figure out her present. In The In-Between, Vlahos recounts the most impactful experiences she’s had with the people she’s worked with—from the woman who never once questioned her faith until she was close to death, to the older man seeing visions of his late daughter, to the young patient who laments that she spent too much of her short life worrying about what others thought of her—while also sharing her own fascinating journey. But this book is different - it’s genuinely funny (which is such a rarity) but it also has so much heart to it. You find yourself wanting so much happiness for both characters & you believe they DESERVE this happiness. I’m a hardcore non-fiction reader - this was not on my reading list. I stumbled upon this, and read it cover to cover in an entire sitting. I love audio books, so actually reading this, I can’t emphasize this enough: It’s beautiful, a story and journey that kept me curious and wanting more.

Excellent Sheep: The Miseducation of the American Elite and the Way to a Meaningful Life (Hardcover) While Darla shares the past story, Julie is living in the unfolding present. She walks the land in silence and sits in silence with the tenant who lives in a cabin on the ranch: Virgil Blue. She learns of spirit animals and symbols. Was I murdered? Did I commit suicide? I don’t know if I’m in some sort of purgatory or if I’ve gone straight to hell. As angry as I was reading this book, I HAD TO KNOW WHAT HAPPENED TO HER! I was up rage reading really late. You get a very realistic look at what it’s like being married to a narcissist while also battling depression and the isolation that usually goes along with that.
