About this deal

The Sigma 85mm f/1.4 DG DN Art replaced the Viltrox 1.8/85 in my camera bag. The Sigma traveled with me through the alps and always finds its way into my camera bag whenever I go outside.

Fast and accurate AF, on a D300 using any mode ( including mounted flash + AF-assist illuminator ). Flare resistance of the Sigma 85mm f/1.4 isn’t great which is unfortunately not uncommon with fast tele lenses. Veiling flare The Sigma 85mm f/1.4 DG DN Art is the new lighter sibling of the famous and enormous Sigma 85mm f1.4 DG HSM Art. This new lens has the following specifications:Sunstars have never been high on Sigma’s priority list and the Sigma 85mm f/1.4 is no exception. The eleven not perfectly aligned aperture blades result in rather fuzzy sunstars with 22 rays. This is a portrait lens though, so complaining about sunstars is a bit unfair. Coma The high resolving power that covers the entire image from the center to the edges ensures sharpness of the area in focus, and coupled with the significant bokeh effect produced by the F-value of 1.4 brings out the users’ subject in an evocative way. The reason my eyes lit up when I saw this is that I recently got my hands on the Sigma 50mm f/1.4 DG HSM Art Lens. I debated long and hard whether to go with that or the Canon EF 50mm f/1.2L USM lens. I opted for the Sigma, but in my limited use so far, I've found that it misses focus more than I like in certain scenarios. I've played with all manner of settings but haven't been able to nail down settings to guarantee a 95 percent or greater keeper rate on shots just yet.

As borne out by our practically perfect lab score, the Sigma is essentially a zero-distortion lens. Verdict Of course my sample might be a little less sharp in the corners, or Jannik and Bastian tested above average samples of the 85GM. With just 0.12x magnification, the Sigma 85mm ƒ/1.4 does not offer exceptional macro performance. Minimum close-focusing distance is just under three feet.

Now, if aesthetics are your thing, know that this lens is bulky once on a camera body and adds an extra bit of weight that you usually don’t expect from primes, especially the Sigma Art collection. At 85mm for a full frame, to get it to be as bright as 1.4 means it has large glass elements, and likely a lot of them, and thus heft and added weight. So here, the choice of making it f/1.4 has led to the engineering issue which requires it to be a more heavy-set lens. [LEARN: Free Engagement Photography Guide] Auto-focus Normal type. Protector is developed to protect the lens surface from dirt and dust as well as scratches. It is an ideal filter for regular use as it is completely colorless so does not affect color reproduction. From what I have seen here the Zeiss Otus delivers similar outstanding results, but I`m quite sure I will be able to use it untill 2050 and maybe longer… 😉 To test PF, I did some test shots at people with bright sunshine. PF was observed and did not disappear until f/4.5.

All we've had till now is the model shots from the Sony event that you attended. I'm sure I speak for many forum readers when I say we would appreciate a gallery of real world shots taken by you guys, like you've done here for the Sigma and other lenses.

Conclusion

For Nikon’s DSLR users, I recommend the Nikon AF-S 85mm f/1.8Fand Nikon AF-S 85mm f/1.4G. The Nikon AF-S 85mm f/1.8F is super light, much smaller, and about half the price of the Sigma. For a beginner, the Nikon option is the perfect tool for learning. For the price you pay, the image sharpness and smooth bokeh are unparalleled. If you’re looking for the perfect portrait lens, maybe you should look at this Sigma 85mm f/1.4 lens. It’s part of their Art series, known for its sharpness and excellent build quality. I use this lens for weddings, portraits, and taking pictures of Mr. White, the kitten. We run a range of lab tests under controlled conditions, using the Imatest Master testing suite. Photos of test charts are taken across the range of apertures and zooms (where available), then analyzed for sharpness, distortion and chromatic aberrations.
