About this deal

Klimek: Yeah. What this makes me think about is, you know, someone who grew up playing with superheroes and reading comic books and stuff. When you and your sister were playing with your Barbies and then subsequently as an adult, I read about how all of the superheroes who are, you know, dominant in the culture now, all created by Jewish writers and artists. To have a progressive Ken in the same way that we've had a progressive Barbie would look different. Right? It wouldn't be like, you can be a doctor. It would be like, you can be a teacher, which is a very feminized profession. You can be a stay-at-home dad. You can be a caretaker. Another 1992 release, which was either very good or very bad year for Mattel, depending on who you ask, Totally Hair Barbie is notable for two things: her hair, which stretched all the way down to her feet, and the insane numbers in which she was sold. Klimek: To read Emily Tamkin's feature story about the history of Barbie, and my piece about groundbreaking Ken dolls through the years, visit SmithsonianMag.com. Jarossi’s description seems to capture the essence of Ryan Gosling’s very Method press tour for Barbie, during which he has been exceedingly deferential to Barbie and offered himboism after himboism. “Very little is known about Kenergy,” he told ET. “And we don’t have the funding for the research. We know that it’s real. In my case it came on as a rash, and then it turned into a tan. And then suddenly you’re shaving your legs, and you’re bleaching your hair, and you’re wearing bespoke rollerblades.” He admitted to BuzzFeed that letting go of the Ken role was “a bit like that Pillsbury dough—go with me on this—Cinnabon mix? Like once you open that canister you’re making Cinnabons. And you’re loving it. You’re loving making Cinnabons.” This special edition bridal Barbie doll featuring an incredible gown from fashion designer Monique Lhuillier has become very expensive despite the fact it has been on the market for only 12 years.

4. Brunette Ken Doll (Japan)

As we know, Ken takes his job, "beach," very seriously. So, there's no reason he shouldn't be a representative of the most well-known beach area in the country — Malibu, California. From PRX, our team is Jessica Miller, Genevieve Sponsler, Adriana Rozas Rivera, Terence Bernardo, and Edwin Ochoa. The executive producer of PRX Productions is Jocelyn Gonzales.

Klimek: Yeah. I mean, are you willing to share a little more about that, the lore that you and your sister invented? Tamkin: In the ’90s, when a sexual harassment case came before the Supreme Court, I somehow as like a 9-year-old found out about this and had my Barbie take her boyfriend Ken to court for sexual harassment. Klimek: So how have Barbies changed and adapted with the times? When do we start to see Barbies with different skin tones, hairstyles, things like that? Get The Best Gift Registered office 9 Appleton Drive, Wymeswold, Loughborough, Leicestershire, LE12 6TS, United Kingdom Klimek: Has a slightly more animated facial expression than prior Kens. He looks like he maybe knows more than he's telling, and he's got, like, I guess I would've called it a leisure suit.

5. Nicolai Ken Doll

Plenty of famous actresses or classic characters have been immortalized by the Barbie brand by creating their very own doll and Lucille Ball of I Love Lucy! fame was not immune to this treatment. You know, as a sign of “You can't put this hyper-feminine pressure onto me as a woman.” Which, again, I do understand even if Mattel would say, “Well, you could be anything,” that's the whole point. Tamkin: I don't, I couldn’t. It's also just like, someone at Mattel thinking like, “What do men do? They shave.” Like, what are some activities? With her radiant opulence, highly-detailed overcoat, and innate sophistication, this Chataine Barbie was released at FAO Schwartz and described by Mattel as being a, "brunette version of Capucine Barbie," another elaborate entry from the Barbie Fashion Model Collection.

Klimek: From Smithsonian magazine and PRX Productions, welcome to “There's More to That," a podcast where journalists around the world bring you history, science and culture through the lens of Smithsonian magazine. Today, we turn our attention to the Ken doll … Someone should do it! There’s a lot of TV out there. We want to help: Every week, we’ll tell you the best and most urgent shows to stream so you can stay on top of the ever-expanding heap of Peak TV. Tamkin: Yeah. And I'm not trying to say that Ruth Handler was consciously going through all of this, but I do think it's important that it comes out of this certain point in American history. He was around for about two years before his original run was discontinued, though he did reappear in the 1990s as a companion for Midge.

Ken got a friend called Allan

Klimek: I wrote a companion piece to Emily’s article about different Ken dolls through the years, and I wanted to compare notes about this simultaneously iconic and overlooked doll. Another newer but extremely limited-run doll makes our list directly after the last, with the doll created with help from superstar designer Karl Lagerfeld. Donning garb inspired by Lagerfeld's actual high-fashion lines around the time of release, Robert Best once again nailed this limited-run doll. From the original Ken doll to the latest special edition, these valuable dolls offer a glimpse into the evolution of fashion, culture and design over the years. We can't list them all here, but this is what you'll get for some of your favorite childhood toys (depending on their condition, of course).
