About this deal

It is through Mariata that we learn much about the culture of the nomadic people of the Sahara region and about how this long tradition is under threat from modern politics. I found this particularly fascinating, especially in how women are regarded in the desert peoples' society.

This act gave rise to the Japanese expression, 敵に塩を送る, Teki ni shio wo okuru, “sending salt to one’s enemy,” a metaphor for not taking ignoble advantage of an enemy’s weakness. From that point on, salt was regularly shipped from the coastal city of Itoigawa to Matsumoto along the 120 km long Salt Road. While both Isabelle and Mariata have romantic relationships, this is not the main focus of the book and at no point does the romance element either dominate or undermine the solving of the puzzle of the amulet. I thoroughly enjoyed reading The Salt Road and was enthralled by the desert landscape which was painted as being full of life and mystery as well as being a dangerous and hostile environment. Our Timetables are listed below. That story involved the lives of two women living in two different time periods paralleling each other. The story and Johnson's writing stayed in my mind; a woven tapestry that at the end was revealed its completion not its unraveling. I know I'm being overly dramatic here but I've never really come across another writer like Jane Johnson, with her exotic settings, evocative prose and dynamic female characters. Maybe I could call up a few authors that have storylines with similar elements but not the same way of threading together the stories and histories of the female characters. Due to works to a sign on the railway bridge at Broadway Grove, service 30 will need to divert in both directions to and From Dines Green between 0900 and 1530.

The working temperature range isn't the same for all types of salt. For example, calcium chloride lowers the freezing point more than sodium chloride.

Filled with wry humour, this is a wonderfully uplifting and touching book, which was shortlisted for the 2018 Costa biography award. This book has an intriguing title which doesn't give any clues to what the book is going to be about which is why I entered for it on Goodreads First Reads, and when I won and it arrived I saw the cover and I just knew it was going to be a good book. The cover gives the impression of the east, which is where the majority of the book is set. And my favourite part of all was learning about a new culture that I had known very little about before. The Tuareg, the Berber people, the tribes, Tin Hinan, and all the other people of the dessert and their daily lives. I am passionate about learning new things, especially as it relates to people and cultures so the Salt Road was a special treat. Atkins, Peter (2006). Atkins' Physical Chemistry.
