This is a gripping tale of the life and adventures of the American explorer, Matthew Henson, of whom I'd never heard of before. The introduction explains my ignorance: "Why was he forgotten and ignored for so many years? The reason was the colour of his skin ..." I found Captain Childs a very interesting character because, as well as being a determined sailor, he accepted Matthew Henson – the main character – for who he was and what colour skin he had, because most white people wouldn’t have during this time.

This book for me personally hit home because even in school today, I still face the realities of being the minority race. Matthew Henson showed real courage, determination and strength which is why I view him as one of the most powerful role models of the 20th century. He endured so much pain and hardship throughout his lifetime even until the day he died; this book teaches us a lesson that even through the hardest of times, perseverance is the true key to success.

Whilst the story depicts scenes of death and hardship, it is not overall an emotionally difficult book to read (probably due to language and pace), and I believe would be suitable for anyone in Y4+. However, racism is a theme throughout and should, as always, be discussed in a sensitive manner with children. Real historical characters and events are woven into the story, including Olaudah Equiano, Granville Sharp, and the story of the slave ship The Zong, and there are some brief historical notes at the end of the book which would make an excellent starting point for further research.

He is a significant polar explorer who some people believe to be the first human to set foot on the North Pole. Johnson was born in London, England, in 1962. Her father was Jamaican and her mother was Welsh. Johnson grew up in North London and attended Tetherdown Primary School. In addition, it teaches you about the past and what the high North is like (the way of living there and conditions). But it is mainly about fighting for what you want to and achieve.
