Another James Herbert re-read (I've re-read a few this year as it's been several...ahem...many years since I first discovered his horror books and devoured the lot) and this was very enjoyable.This is not to say that the story is flawless; far from it. Herbert uses a distinctive style which will be off-putting to some readers : the slow-burn. The first two thirds of the book is extremely slowly paced, very much like a mundane detective investigation with the occasional burst of violence or horror.

Overall, though, it was a reasonably good return to horror for Herbert, and I likely would have enjoyed it more if the story hadn't relied as heavily on two tropes I typically don't enjoy. The best thing about the book was that I managed to finish it. But this is probably due to the fact that I veeeeery rarely put books aside. 'Others' was not a rewarding read - it was to much of a mix-up of good things and horrible things (in the literary sense). But the bad sides prevailed - to many cliches, to many mundane monologues...

Others came into its own for me after my husband became severely disabled. Reading it again I enjoyed even more having a hero who isn’t able bodied and a heroine who has a disability of her own to struggle with. The writer conveyed a real sympathy and an understanding of what it feels like to be (or be with) someone that people stare at in the street – although thankfully in that regard the world is changing for the better. With his next novel, Lair (1979), Herbert regaled readers with the return of the rats, and he completed the trilogy with Domain (1984), set in a future where rats are now dominant following a nuclear war that has devastated civilisation. Herbert's The City (1994), a graphic novel illustrated by Ian Miller, was set in the same post-apocalypse world in which only a handful of people have survived. After the death of her husband Gerald, Shelly became overwrought, went a little bit crazy with grief.She was afraid of being alone in the world,and the thought of finding her long lost son seemed to provide her some comfort.
