About this deal

Allowing for a frequency spectrum of a full 20Hz-20kHz, the built-in TRESMIC 3 microphone system ensures a rich stereophonic sound capture – irrespective of the environment the LS-P4 is used in. Sound-quality wise, I road-tested the LP-4S with some interviews I made at Real World for our feature and it handled each with some aplomb, never letting me down and even allowing me to distinguish, by position, two interviewees with very similar voices. Great sound quality, too. On a more musical note, I tried it on my acoustic piano, finding it best placed right in front for some lovely, deep and intricate results. Conclusion The inbuilt memory is 8GB – this can capture over 250 hours of MP3 at 320kbps – but the device also supports a Micro SD card up to 32GB. You can find lots of videos on youtube about people reviewing mics. Look for things like "on-location mic" or "boom mic" or similar to find mics meant to record at a distance.

I have also tried it out on my walks and the results were perfectly acceptable for my purposes. As I originally said, I am looking for some way to record all the birds I hear on my walks. The setup proved to be very capable of recording even quite distant calls. Whilst these cannot be considered definitive recordings, I had no trouble at all recognising calls from 150-200 metres away. I used the pop filter and a small furry windshield, but this did not stop some wind noise getting through. Maybe I need to use a second, bigger furry mouse. It’s a bit more expensive, but the Zoom does feature four-channel recording and can be used as a four-in/two-out USB audio interface. At nearly 300g, it weighs a lot more than the Olympus, though. It also requires two batteries rather than one.I think that there is a setting for plug in power in the menu, ideally this should be off for your current set-up but shouldn't be a problem if left on. With simple post processing his needs can probably be achieved with lighter less expensive kit, however, he appears to have an experienced friend to help and I'm sure he can assist him in this matter.

Many parabola mics use lavs or other small omnis in them. They can distort sound a fair bit, and change the frequencies, depending on the geometry and size. But they can have pretty high gain too. The LS-P1 has 90º directional microphones and a Zoom mode offers targeted focus on the desired sound being recorded. (The feature is enabled via the menu system using a graphic not unlike the angle of view diagram familiar to photographers. If recording a static subject speaking, you’d favour a setting of +6; to capture as much ambient noise as possible, you’d go for -3.) According to my inventory I own an Olympus ME31 small shotgun, which will work and tops out at 15 kHz. and is about 3x more sensitive than your ME15. I havn't tried it with birds and suspect that the Rode VideoMic Pro+ might be better, it certainly has a better frequency range though their sensitivity is nominally similar, as with binoculars, specifications only give you part of the story. The ME66 that Marc uses is of course far superior, bigger, and more expensive, you pays your money....
