About this deal

You are entitled to raise any concern about your health and safety at work, and that of your child, with your employer and they are required to assess it. You might be an employee even if your employer or your contract says you’re self-employed. You might not be an employee if for example you work for an agency or you’re not guaranteed to get any work. Almost 3 in 10 mothers (28.5%) with a child aged 14 years and under said they had reduced their working hours because of childcare reasons. This compared with 1 in 20 fathers (4.8%). Some mothers choose not to work, or to work less hours while they are raising children. However, for many other women, they effectively have little or no choice. If they did not work, they would not be able to bring enough income to support their families. In April to June 2019, 3 in 4 mothers with dependent children (75.1%) were in work in the UK. This compared with 92.6% of fathers with dependent children.

If you meet their criteria, your employer must legally consider your request seriously, and only reject it if there are good business reasons for doing so. Striking a balance Your employer should already have assessed any potential risks to women of a childbearing age as part of their general risk assessment process.
