About this deal

In the picture above, both the red and blue photons bounce (scatter) 4 times while they are penetrating the skin. But because the red photons travel a longer distance in between scattering events, they manage to penetrate both layers of skin. The melanin in Tissue B absorbs the red photon so it can’t leave the skin and reach your eye. The lesula, which is the first new monkey found in Africa for 28 years, is remarkable in particular for its vibrant colouring. It has a pink face, golden throat, massive whiskers and a vertical white stripe up its nose, which gives it some resemblance to the already well known owl-faced monkey. Males leave the troop when they reach sexual maturity. Usually they leave with a cousin or another male in the same situation. At least three other anthropoid primates are exclusive to the region, according to the researchers—the Lomami River red colobus, the Lomami River blue monkey, and the Kasuku River Wolf’s monkey. Like all of Congo’s remaining large mammals, these species are threatened by uncontrolled commercial bush meat hunting and habitat loss. Unfortunately, some people in the world want everything for themselves. They claim to make the world better through science, but all they do is make the world better for one species.

Some monkeys are friendly with each other. But other monkeys are nasty pieces of work. They get aggressive towards others and try to bully themselves into positions of power. Five baboon species live in Africa and Arabia–the olive, the yellow, the chacma, the guinea, and the hamadryas. Vervets can also be identified through their troop behaviour. They are highly social animals who typically live and travel together, in comparison to some monkeys who can be solitary or bashful.

Like in many female monkeys, a red and swollen bottom indicates an ovulating and fertile female looking for a mating partner–this is a non-verbal way for the female chimp to communicate her sexual wants to the male chimp anytime she’s on heat. Different vervet monkeys behave differently and this is fascinating to researchers. For example, one mother will not allow any other female to carry their child, while another mother will happily leave their offspring in the hands of any interested female. a b Perelman, P.; Johnson, W. Mandrills mainly live in tropical rainforests but will also travel across savannas. They are active during the day and spend most of their time on the ground. Their preferred foods are fruit and seeds, but mandrills will consume leaves, piths, mushrooms, and animals from insects to juvenile antelope. Mandrills live in large, stable groups known as "hordes" which can number in the hundreds. Females form the core of these groups, while adult males are solitary and only reunite with the larger groups during the breeding season. Dominant males have the most vibrant colors and fattest flanks and rumps, and have the most success siring young.
