As Wei Wuxian and Lan Wangji seek to unravel the mystery behind the demonic arm, they face both enemies and friends of old, and its link to Wei Wuxian's downfall all those years ago. Only 4 stars because the portion from after they drag ‘Mo Xuanyu’ from his room at night to where the Ghost General appears on Mount Dafan - all that in between has never been one of my favorite parts of the novel. No matter what adaptation I read it or watch it in. No idea why. All 260 chapters of stories are a romantic buildup with something that one would usually call 'filler episodes' taking up majority of the chapters. But no, the manhua mostly throws around names of sects, characters and such... but none of them matter, wasting memory on them is an exercise in futility as most of them will be forgotten by the author after a few chapters.

The relationship of the protagonists is perfectly rooted into the main story. It is the driver of the plot but it never overshadows all the unexpected twists, creative world-building, and intelligently written mysteries. No element of this story is lesser than the others, and everything gets just the right amount of spotlight to allow such a long tale to feel fresh, arc after arc.

Apart from the novel, it has manhua, audio drama, and donghua (Chinese equivalent to anime), out of which the donghua has been completed, with the third and final season airing in 2021. This is the best Boy's Love manga I've read. Despite being a Chinese manga, and having to follow the strict censorship regulations of LGBT+ content that exist in China, the relationship of the two protagonists has been adapted clearly and beautifully, being as faithful as legally possible to the source novel. Wei WuXian is one of the best protagonists I've seen in anime and manga. He's such a diverse, funny, strong, flawed, scary and commanding character; he's perfect as our guide for this very, very complex story. Lan Zhan, the second protagonist, has incredible depth and it's impossible not to admire how much time was spent creating such an endearing badass that actually deserves all the praise he gets inside the story. The manhua won the silver award for the Most Popular Webtoon Adaptation category at the 16th China Animation Golden Dragon Award in 2019. In the same year, it was awarded the Best Manhua Award at the China Golden Rooster and Hundred Flowers Film Festival. Honestly one of the best mangas I've ever read, it does a pretty good job at following the novel! The art is amazing and all the necessary emotions are very visible and you can't help but love wangxian from the very begining!

On May 25, 2022, Seven Seas Entertainment announced official English translations of the manhua, the first volume of which was released on March 7, 2023. I give characters a 9/10 because while I'm impressed by the ones mentioned above, the remaining cast ranges from good to average.
