I'll give you a hint on how to get through the first part of this book. Drink two of Alex's Haste Potions, and speed read through it as fast as you can. It was really bad writing. The minotaur’s image shattered, as the bolt drove through the pazuzite’s skull. Ripp slipped from limp hands, and the air elementals were there, catching him on cushions of wind. I loved just about every bit of this. In the last book, I felt that some aspects of previous books had all but disappeared, such as the golem workshop. This book felt like a much better balance of new material without forgetting past adventures.

So. No story arc at the end. No climax. And no resulting satisfaction. The only reason this gets such a high score is because up until the non-structured ending, it was a superb YA book. Really like how Alex is finally coming into his own, and how the author is slowly peeling the layers of this intriguing onion. Together with Grubsong the Weaverlings can generate a fair amount of SOUL. Even more so if a weak enemy is kept alive until the end of a wave and one allows the Weaverlings to hit it repeatedly. This combo can also help extract SOUL from the Garpede section mentioned above. Our main character Alex ends up being, you guessed it, the fool. This disrupts his plans of attending wizard school and taking care of his younger sister after their parents died in a tragic fire four years ago. History shows previous fools tend to die or become maimed nearly every time, so Alex decides to dodge the draft and escape to wizard school instead. Joining him on his escape are his female childhood friend who is a ranger type, his younger sister who seems to roleplay as a wet blanket that just shouts his name over and over while crying anytime anything happens, and his childhood friend's 3-headed cerberus legendary dog.Fire magic and hellfire wove together, roiling with a life of its own; demons around their master burst into flame. Stone beneath his feet melted, bubbling like lava, his trident wilted like a flower hit by the first frost, metal dripping like candle wax. Shaman Stone allows Shade Soul to kill many flying enemies (most notably Primal Aspids and Armoured Squits) in a single blast, allowing the Knight to deal with enemies from afar and not risk getting hit. This is especially useful during the section without any floor, as the SOUL can't be spent on healing anyway. The minotaur suddenly leapt at the pazuzite hovering a half dozen feet above the battle, his mace swinging. What could have been an intriguing series opener turned out to be an average outing because of uneven pacing and some unnecessary chapters

Hey, why the hell would you think we’d work for you if you’d throw away your own subordinate to keep yourself alive?” he called, drawing on his staff’s ebbing energies to conjure a flight of air elementals around him. The worst attempt I’ve ever seen,” Paul groaned as he lifted himself from the fountain. “But, if he’s willing to try something that stupid, then maybe we should take a look. Last thing we need is for some bigwig to turn all green in the face and keel over. Come on, Peter.” That’s right!” Thundar roared, holding up a broken tiashiva beside a victorious Claygon. “Your great master is dead! If you don’t want any of this—” he gestured to the golem and Kyembe. “—then get the hells gone, before we get realnasty!” After that rough beginning though, the story glistened. While the dungeon fight was a cut & paste job, the battle at the windmill was clever, creative, and novel. There was just a hint of repetition, but it was done deliberately with a nod to the Mark in the process. Which is why it ended up getting its full four stars. The progression of Alex's skills is well thought out and logically developed. There is a glimmer of hope (to be played out in the next book?) that MC felt like a side character in the team that distracts the target till the main character comes swooping down to save him.

Nor is Alex stagnant. My other favorite bit of the book is Alex's self-improvement plan. He's connected the dots on a few things after fighting the latest mana manipulation training device, and combined disciplines in a novel way. The weightlifting contests between him and the others are hilarious. Especially when Grimloch gets involved. Ultimately, I'm glad I read it, but also glad I skimmed past the several chapters worth of the main character's thoughts and feelings which leant little if anything to the story. The magic system is also ridiculous. It's an unholy mixture of everything available in the subgenre, from wuxia to LitRPG. And because we've forgotten about our original premise, without the context in which it fits (the other marks) the whole "fool's mark" concept just turns into a very dubious convenience. Small irritation, Theresa mentions getting another date, but none happens in this book. The closest event to a date is some training that has some fun.
