About this deal

Many years have passed since the tale of Arthur and the Golden Rope, and Arthur is now a world-famous adventurer. If only his daughter Marcy shared his enthusiasm for exploration Book #2 in "Brownstone's Mythical Collection". Another pint sized hero who uses kindness, courage, and brains to save the day. This time it centers around Arthur's daughter Mary, who is afraid of the dark. This story introduces the reader to a few basic aspects of Egyptian Mythology.

It was excellent. I liked it when Marcy went towards the serpent and jumped out at his tail to free her father Todd-Stanton’s whimsical illustrations feature mazelike details chronicling Marcy’s quest throughout the book.”— School Library Journal In this book, readers will follow Marcy, from the adventure stories of her father she loves to hear every night to the adventures she takes of her own. Marcy is afraid of the dark, at home before sleep and out on an adventure with her dad. When a week has gone by and her father hasn’t returned from his urgent business away from home, Marcy decided to go rescue him. From her father’s office, she learns that he has gone to Egypt. Aim with a mission, she feels braver as she climb onto Wind Weaver to travel to Egypt. When Marcy arrives, she meet Thoth, god of knowledge and asks for his help to rescue her dad. He gives her two choices, either go into the belly of the Sphinx in the dark or find Ra, the sun god. Through many challenges, courage, and test of virtues, Marcy must decide the right path to take to rescue her father. Such a fun follow up to Arthur and the Golden Rope! Arthur has grown up, married, and become a father while still managing to be an avid adventurer. He notices that his daughter Marcy is hesitant to explore the world, so he sets off mysteriously to obtain a book in Egypt for her. BBC Teach offers a short film about the Valley of the Kings for KS2, presented by Dr Joann Fletcher.I liked Marcy the best because she's an interesting character. She is brave. I would recommend this book to someone else. Kids will love this exciting excavation of ancient Egyptian myths as they follow along with the clever Marcy on a quest to save her dad from the belly of the sphinx!

I am so very glad this is a series! Marcy and the Riddle of the Sphinx is the very definition of charming. I love that the story follows directly behind the previous rather than jumping through other ancestors first (it's cute to see Arthur as a dad!). The art is, of course, stunning! You can really tell that Todd-Stanton was a kid fond of the maps & cutaways that featured in books like Eloise (hard same, my dude, hard same). These addition, to me at least (with my big old 90's nostalgia glasses) give the story an old-school adventure feel in the best way. I can unequivocally say that small child Darcy would have loved this book with both hands (& large child Darcy does too). This book is fictional. It is an historical adventure. The book is all about a little girl called Marcy whose father, Arthur, is an adventurer. Her father goes on a journey to a desert to get a book all about the secrets in the world. He gets trapped by a snake and Marcy helps to free him. They have lots of adventures. It’s a really good story and I would recommend it. When Marcy's adventurer father, Arthur, disappears in Egypt, she reluctantly sets off in his footsteps. She soon finds herself standing before the great Sphinx and must answer its riddle before she can enter and find Arthur, who is trapped inside. Her only option is to ask the Egyptian gods for help, but in the end it is up to Marcy to complete the final task. Can she overcome her deepest fears and save her father?

Marcy and the Riddle of the Sphinx by Joe Todd-Stanton is a fabulous fun topic book for your KS2 Ancient Egypt topic. This was sooooo cute. I loved the illustrations and how the story developed. Cute story for children on how to overcome fear. This is worthy continuation on Todd-Stanton's basic premise and it enriches the tapestry he has begun to put together. I like the fact that he uses Arthur yet again, albeit as starting point to set Marcy's story into motion, just as very much appreciate Marcy as the book's protagonist. It ensures both continuity of and expansion upon what has already been introduced and established.
