About this deal

This is an excellent fire starter that strikes up to 12,000 times with its 5/16-inch ferro rod. The ÜberlebenZünden Traditional Bushcraft Fire Steel looks and feels amazing when used. Its 5,500-degree Fahrenheit sparks help you ignite a fire at any altitude and any weather, even in the rain. I’ll admit right off, I wanted to dislike this thing, for the very reasons given above. But guess what? It works way better than I ever expected. The UST Sparkie flint produces really hot sparks, and it was far more effective and easy to use in our testing than the basic magnesium and ferro rod, above. With the Army 2.0 model, you get an improved stainless steel striker as well as an ergonomic handle for comfort and ease of use. The Survival Spark is a small, multi-tool of a fire starter with some extra handy gadgets to go along with it.

BIC lighters are pretty reliable too. They advertise they can give about 3,000 lights (realistically, it’s more like 1,000 to 2,000). Even though BIC lighters are meant to be disposable, you can refill them. Don’t buy something just because of a high price tag. It doesn’t always mean it’s the better piece of gear. Price can be a reflection of quality, but it can also lead to unnecessary and over-the-top products. Compared to other matches, the UCO matches burn for much longer – 15 seconds versus about 5 seconds with typical matches. They are coated, so they are completely waterproof.

Technically it does work, but the Coghlan’s Flint Striker is small and difficult to wield. I had to really dig into the outer coating to even get an initial spark, with something like 20 of the first strikes not producing anything. Soak-and-dry-test:The Zippo dried out enough to light in a half-hour. Like the Bic, it won’t spark once the flint or steel is wet.

The Rothco Aurora Fire Starter is a high-quality survival starter that is quality tested and ensured to give you maximum durability. Ferro rods are constructed with different metals, which make it easier or more difficult to scrape depending on the composition. Softer rods don’t have as long of a lifespan but generally provide more sparks with each strike. Most ferro rods are made with about 50% cerium, with various ratios of lanthanum and iron making up the rest of the mixture. On the downside, the Ferro rod built into this fire starter is tiny. It doesn’t do a great job of throwing sparks. Picture the UST Blastmatch. Now remove all the unnecessary weight, gut it and make it as light as possible without entirely obliterating functionality. Lifespan Five pine tinder shreds burn up to 8 minutes each; the lifespan of ferro rod and striker depends on the frequency of useDo you often go on survival adventures, camping or hiking? Are you always on the lookout for awesome devices andgadgets to improve your gear or survivalkit? Cotton balls, alcohol, and ferrocerium make for a pyromaniac’s dream. We put these fire starters to the test with rigorous, repetitive use and carry. Cotton Ball Test

Against wind and damp paper: Titan for the win! This thing burns long enough to dry out the damp paper, leaving you with a hot fire that will continue to burn long after the match is out. Wind didn’t have a chance.

However, if you opt for a natural fire starter, place it on the fuel, and torch the flat top edge to turn it into a burning ball. Use this fire to light up the fuel effortlessly. I love that the Zippo fire starter is easy to use (at least easier than a standard Ferro rod) and is one-hand operational.
