It would be unfortunate to see a beautiful pen damaged or dissolved by cleaning with the wrong supplies (especially since you mentioned that your friend was a "clean-freak". I very much like the look and feel of the brass and I also like the fact that the pen has a design that has been around for so long and probably can be called timeless. After having investigated the options I could find for a travel pen, I decided that a Kaweco brass Sport with “M”-nib would likely be the right choice for me. I did not have the opportunity to physically try any of the pens in question and had therefore to rely on what I could find online. The 'raw' brass finish has no lacquer to wear off. Instead, the bare metal, like the pen's owner, will reflect the trials, tribulations and joys of a lifetime's work and play, with with the surface mellowing over time to a fine burnished patina unique to it's history. Finally, I smoothened the writing surface of the nib on increasing fine polishing pads (starting at 8000 then 10k and finally 12k).

It looks really good. On your last photo it looks quite shiny. Is there some sort of lacquer on the push knob? Kaweco’s Brass Sport ballpoint pen is immediately recognizable with its characteristic octagonal shape, which was first introduced in 1935. It has the kind of charm that never goes out of style. The chunky yet elegant design is also practical, as the octagonal cross-section lets the pen sit flat on a table without rolling away. It's a great pen, good weight, I find it nicer in the hand than the plastic Kaweco. I definitely feel it's worth the extra pennies.

How to tell if a pen is wet or dry. How to remedy with out doing things to the pen (using dry or wet inks). For traveling and for use “on the go” I wanted a pen that is compact and highly robust and at the same time a reasonably good and comfortable writer. All that in a price range that would not let me completely panic in case I would miss the pen during travel or it got stolen.

While being compact it feels very substantial and robust. The mechanical pencil shares its retractable design with the ballpoint pen. All the mechanical pencils are refillable with 0.7 mm lead. Now the pen writes really lovely and I am very happy with owning it. I like the feel when having it in my hand and how it writes so nice and smooth on the different papers I tried. It feels like I could write very comfortable with it for hours, something I had not expected. The portable ballpoint pen pairs the Kaweco’s octagonal shape with a retractable mechanism. The pre-installed refill contains blue ink. While it’s perfectly serviceable, we recommend substituting it with a higher quality D1 size refill for a smoother and more consistent writing experience.
