About this deal

this proprietary format takes the HDD out of any real use for anything outside the PVR until it is reformatted to ext3 or other non proprietary format......... Humax PVR9300T review If you want an affordable, highly effective and good value Freeview+ PVR, the Humax PVR9300T has much to commend it Hi all, I've had my unit since about late 2011 and have never been able run a software update on it, the version showing is UPTTF 1.00.26 July 7 2011. Auto or manual updates do not work. Is the only way to force an update to connect to my laptop with a special RS232 lead? We've read that early versions of the Humax suffered from considerable fan noise, but our sample (sporting later firmware) was fine, humming away at acceptably low volumes throughout our time with it, save for a brief gust of noise each time you start up. I assume the OS on these boxes is some sort of Linux distro. Is the OS actually on the drive or held in NVram?

For flat TV owners there's also an HDMI output, able to deliver 576p and 720p video, but, perhaps curiously, not 1080i/1080p. The problem i have is that come what may i cannot seem to control the sound via the sound control on the Humax remote control. I have to revert to using the tv remote to change the sound which is v annoying.

However, there are restrictions – if you’re recording two channels on different multiplexes, then you can only watch a third channel if it’s on the same multiplex as one of the channels being recorded. But if you’re recording two channels on the same multiplex, then you can watch a third channel from any multiplex. It sounds complicated, but trust us, it’s a very useful feature. Problems of this type can also be caused if the PVR is receiving signals from more than one transmitter. This is becoming more common as the transmitter power is increased following digital switchover. An indication that signals are being received from more than one transmitter is that the EPG has entries in the 800 series channel locations. If this is the case the solution is to manually tune to the correct frequencies for your local transmitter. We hoped this would allow transfer of recordings to a PC for editing, or MP3 and JPEG files to the hard disk as per the 9200T, but sadly the port was redundant on our unit. Humax says this non-functional oddity will eventually be removed, as users apparently don't regard USB as a key feature. I will concede that my solution is destructive of data but would argue that a PVR is inherently more about time-shift than it is about long term storage of masses of media. There are other methods significantly more appropriate for this task - including netflix! and iTunes You program the remote with a code to operate your Tv and this differs according to the make of your Tv...there should be a code list somewhere in the user manual and instructions for how to set it up, obviously you'll need the code for Samsung.

The rear panel is even more interesting. The most significant addition is HDMI output, which offers a clean all-digital connection to your flat-panel TV and allows you to upscale Freeview pictures to 720p, but strangely not 1080i. It’s taken a while for HDMI to make its way to the Freeview PVR market but with Humax and Topfield leading the way, others are sure to follow suit.

The 9300T has twin tuners and a clever hard disk storage system that enables you to watch one programme, either live or pre-recorded, whilst recording another, or even to watch two different programmes at the same time with the picture in picture function. However, if you do a lot of recording of single programmes, or of whole series’, you’ll appreciate the main benefit of the PVR-9300T over the PVR-9150T in the increased storage available. The 320Gb hard disk is capable of storing up to 200 hours of television, so you could even record every single episode of The Wire if you wish. I have a 9300t 320Gb and wanted to upgrade the drive; I'm having to constantly manage capacity and it's getting 'glitchy'. The plan was to put the new disk in, format it and if all was well, transfer the files from the old disk. Unfortunately I hit a snag; here's what happened: If you want to save your existing recordings it may be difficult because I believe that you can't just copy them off the HDD by inserting the HDD in a caddy and connecting it to a PC etc as they are encrypted, so you would have to overcome that as well. What a full format will do (that may be helpful) is to map out any marginal sectors; this is done by the disk controller firmware and so is a level below the file system and hence will persist when reformatted. The 9300T's operating system oozes user-friendliness across the board, with top-notch menu design, ultra-fast reactions and a magnificently intuitive remote that you can use with your eyes shut. Auto channel tuning snaps into action from the first power-up, while the setup menu is so straightforward that any tweaks can be carried out without consulting the manual.

The Humax PVR9300T is a the bigger brother to the popular 9150T, and whilst you get all the same benefits there are also some essential additions which make it a serious device for the power user. From initial setup, updating to the latest software or frequently asked questions, follow these links to help you get sorted with your product: I found that i had no sound at all which is why i had to use the audio cable. With the two cables combined I had a perfect picture and sound was controlled using the 9300 controller. All i used the TV controller for was turning it on and off and selecting source if needed. I'm reasonably computer savvy, just wanting to preempt any problems before I hit them, so any advice is welcome. It involves a bit of gear and time of course but once you have saved what you want then you can reformat the HDD and see if that resolves the problem. Two tuners, of course means you can record two programmes at the same time, whilst watching another, or if using the aerial loop-through, you can still use the tuner in your TV. A word on warning on the loop through - if you turn on the "power saving in standby" feature, it will not pass the signal through very well, meaning some channels drop out. Something that tech support don't know aout has little value for the owners of this unit when it fails I assume that actually formatting the drive achieves nothing? If that is the case then I agree this is a classic case of hard drive failure. You're left with unofficial versions out of the goodness of people's hearts and no guarantee that the link is valid.

Thanks for that. I've had a look at the adapters you mentioned. Now to decide whether to go that route or just buy another PVR. The signal quality is often 100%. I do use manual tuning, I got the codes from Digital UK. Maybe I should re tune every week but surely that shouldn't be necessary. So perhaps if I bought the new model it might work better, although that is an expensive gamble.

An idea maybe is that since you can replay them is to get a HDMI splitter (example only) and connect the PVR to a TV and a PC via the splitter and then use a video capture card in the PC to copy and save the videos to maybe an external HDD connected to the PC. If this utility can be run from a box where the loader application file won't load the this may be the case Well, the wait is over with the launch of this model, which hopefully builds on the brilliance of its predecessor.
