About this deal

The object of Hues and Cues is to score points by correctly guessing the color another player is describing. The cue-giver can also earn points when players correctly guess (or come close to guessing) the color they’re describing. Teachers can get creative with different ways to use this color game as a center during rotations. One idea would be to open the game board and post some cues for the colors you want students to guess. Then write down their coordinates and keep them a secret! On the card there will be four different colors and coordinates. The coordinates help you find the color on the gameboard. The cue giver will choose one of the four colors that they will use for the round. Yes, that worked for me. My ideas for the game came to me at the oddest times. In the shower or during twilight sleep while trying to wake up in the morning. For every hour I spent actively working on the game itself, I easily had it in my head four times as much just thinking through different aspects and possibilities.

At this point the players will compare their scores. The player that has scored the most points wins the game. The green player scored the most points in the game. Therefore the green player has won the game. After playing this color game, you’ll probably have ideas about how to modify the rules for your own specific needs. Here are some of my suggestions you could also try. I consulted with a board-certified ophthalmologist during the design process. On top of that, I – and multiple publishers – tested the game with different players of all types of deficiencies. Because Hues and Cues isn’t about “what colour is an apple”… It’s about how one recalls or sees an apple, and how well it matches the other players’ perceptions of an apple, say. So players who see the colour spectrum differently will still see the hue in the same area of the board as you and I do. That being said, I don’t think Hues and Cues is a game that you’d breakout every week with the same gaming group. However, you could definitely introduce this to new people and get a great reaction. It’s an easy game that people will understand easily, and new players could honestly jump in mid-round if people want to come and go at, say, a family gathering.I consider Hues and Cues a party-style game since it accommodates up to ten players out of the box. Players give one-and-two-word clues to try to get the other players to guess which colour they’re describing. The twist is they can’t use colour clues like “blue” or “green” for example. They also can’t refer to anything in the room. We really like that the scoring frame has numbers printed on the edges so you can easily remember how many points you get for being inside vs adjacent outside the walls.

Right. And there was great interest from a number of them, including some with an international presence. I felt strongly that I wanted a company that had its feet in both the mass-market and hobby game worlds – and there are very few that can claim both. Even then, word got around and we were being chased down and asked to demo it at no less than ten other booths! Of course, that’s assuming we’re both talking about the same shade of an apple to start with. A number of board-game reviewers and designers with colour deficiencies have given it their thumbs-up – and their win and lose record is the same as any other player. Hues and Cues is played over a number of rounds. The number of rounds depends on the number of players. If there are three to six players, each player will be the cue giver twice. If there are seven or more players, each player will be the cue giver once. I also heard of someone whose child played this game with a grandparent over FaceTime. Both players would need to have their own game board for this to work. But what a fun way to connect across the miles and across generations. A color game ‘icebreaker’ That said, there are a lot of similar shades on this board. To be exact—480 different colored squares. Trying to tell minty green from slightly minty-er green is pretty difficult. Of course, the scoring frame means you’ll get points for being just in the neighborhood, but it can feel a little bit like shooting in the dark. Of course, that’s also what makes the game rewarding when you come up with a clue that just nails it for everyone. Final Thoughts:Yes. Because of my experience with colour theory, I knew everyone could describe colours using their own recollections – whether it’s comparing it to food items, their first car or their favourite Pokemon. That became the starting point. Each player then scores the two pieces they placed on the gameboard. They will score points based on where their pieces are located in relation to the color for the round. Well… It’s been argued that writing things down is the most-important process! So is Hues and Cues your only game? Or have I missed some?

Clue giving often evolves from pretty straight forward clues like “apple,” “broccoli” or “tree bark” to more group specific clues that recall favorite places, foods, or other silly things. It’s a fun way to see how your fellow players associate colors. Finally if your piece touches the outside of the scoring frame (it is just outside of the scoring frame), you will score one point for the piece. This includes pieces that diagonally touch the outside of the scoring frame. I do have one minor component quality complaint about Hues and Cues which is that the board is very glossy and glare can be an issue. We found that under certain lighting (like for instance the pot lights in my game room), where you are sitting and where the glare is on the board can affect how the colours look. Should your piece be inside the scoring frame but is not the exact color, you will receive two points for it. If you guess the exact same space as the color for the round, you receive three points for that piece.
