Have you ever been to a sushi restaurant? You sit at a bar of sorts, with a conveyor belt beyond you, at arm’s reach. Chefs create sushi, traditional Japanese rice-based dishes with seafood and vegetables. Once prepared, they place them on the conveyor belt and it passes along in front of the customers. See something you like? Grab it off the conveyor belt! You eat what you like, and pay for empty plates in front of you at the end of your meal. It was brought to the UK from Japan over 100 years ago and Go continues today to expand in popularity. You can read much about the history of Go in the UK too. Go is one of the world's great strategy board games and originated over 3,000 years ago in China. It is part of popular culture today in Japan, China and Korea, and known as Igo, Weiqi or Baduk respectively in these countries. Others meet in public venues such as a community centre. Often a pub provides a free location to play, provided you partake of their food and drink. If there is a university in your town it is sometimes possible to play there, especially if there are several students in the club. You may have seen Go played in the movies, in such as "A Beautiful Mind" or "Pi", or in television programmes such as "24" or "Enterprise", or read about it in novels such as "Shibumi" or "The Girl that played Go". More and more, Go is entering Western culture as well as Oriental. Also unlike many other games draws are almost non-existent, but the margins of winning/losing can be very small. You might think that there will be no-one your strength at a club, but don't worry: if there isn't, someone friendly will be happy to play a handicap game against you and give you a bit of tuition! The Go Quest one is especially friendly for beginners as there's no need to try and work out what grade you have as it works it out for you and also allows you to play 9x9 or 13x13 Go. Go has very simple rules and concepts, but a complex strategy. You start with an empty board. You alternately place pieces which don't move (called stones) on it. You try to surround empty areas, whilst capturing your opponent's stones by surrounding them and taking them off the board. However, as with a lot of simple concepts, it can take a little while to grasp the concepts and a long time to master them. Some of these also have specific teaching sessions, but anyway there will be people who will happily review your game for you after each round. You can play Go informally at home or with friends, but being part of a club means you will probably have a chance to play more different opponents.
