About this deal

I have 2 of the Zippy LiFePO4 4200mAh and find them pretty good. I get about 5-6 hours out of 1 on my 817 and weigh 480gm each and a decent size (you can fit 3 or 4 lengthways on an 817). I use a Zippy 8400 mAh 4S2P LiFePo4. Great for all radio types, loads of capacity, never emptied on FT817, just under 2 hours on FT450D at 100 Watts SSB. For info: Portable battery choices | VK3ZPF Ham Radio Blog The FT-817 is stable enough for casual HF operating but could be even more stable. Better stability is desirable if you operate frequency critical digital modes or 70cm SSB where variations become significant. Fitting a TCXO

My FT-817 sits quite happily on top of my Maplin 3A power supply and looks as if it was made for it. Unfortunately, the magnetic field from the mains transformer affects the 817's VFO, giving a "dirty" note to signals. The power supply is also twice as high and about 4 times as heavy as the FT-817, making it not something you really want to carry around on trips. I thought I would try to find something smaller and lighter. What is not apparent from this is that the compressed transmission is narrower and cleaner. That's because without the compressor, the FT-817's ALC is providing the compression. I have done what most FT-817 owners probably do, and turned the SSB mike level up to get a louder signal, at the cost of a bit of splatter. The RF compressor cleanly reduces the peaks, as well as bringing the lower levels up, so the ALC doesn't have to work so hard. The end result is a louder but cleaner signal. Whether that's worth the cost is your decision. Working CW preferred as some of the earlier '817s blew their final amplifiers. You can recognise an ND model by its choice of three (rather than two) screen lighting colours. The difference between the FT-817ND and FT-818 is negligible; if you already own an '817 you wouldn't buy an '818. There really is no right answer to this question. Also, each and every one of us has a different requirement. So, what we really need to do first, is answer a few questions.

Tom Watson, then IBM chairman, who said in 1958: ‘I think there is a world market for about five computers.’ One question that sprang to mind after getting the 12V switched mode PSU was: would using a 12V supply affect the battery charging function of the FT-817? Would the batteries need to be charged for longer? Would the voltage be sufficient to charge the batteries at all?

The design calls for protected 18650s to be used. These have a circuit in them that isolates them if you try to draw current when the cell is discharged to its minimum voltage. i.e. you can’t over discharge them. It also disconnects them if the voltage applied to the cell exceeds 4.2V. With that type of 18650 and the green wire in place, the whole system looks to be fine and dandy. FT817 s thrive from lower voltage, driving them with 12v or above has no benefits and it just causes the radio to heat up. A 3S lipo is pretty much ideal in terms of voltage. A surprising number of FT-817/FT-818 owners use their rig on HF, and maybe VHF/UHF FM repeaters, but not on VHF/UHF SSB.

Hi Colin - I know that - that’s why I questioned whether the cable was there. With my LIPO, I have a simple voltage divider (2 100k resistors) across the output to provide the sense voltage on the green wire to tell the 817 not to allow charging from an external source. The same principal used as when the AA container is installed in the rig.

Some form of digital modes interface between your FT-817/FT-818 and phone / computer. Build or buy, eg this one for Android phonesTo use CW with the FT-817 you need to install the optional CW filter. The standard filter is too wide, so you hear too many other signals and noise, making it hard to copy any other than the strongest signal in the passband.
