This is a really good book to use with KS2 for a WWII topic. You could also use this book in English as there are a number of dilemma scenarios in this book. My favourite and possibly the most important - where the boys have the dilemma of whether or not to help the German soldiers they found on the moor. Get the class to have a debate- either split the class in two and have each side debating their argument or give each child the chance to put their own opinion across. With this you could use A, B, C (agree, build or challenge), getting the children to challenge courteously (this could be your learning objective). The theming in this book opens opportunities for History such as looking into what it was like to be an evacuee - Didcot Railway Centre offers WWII experiences to schools. The novel is about a rural couple named Junior and Hen who, one evening, get a visit from a stranger from a big city corporation. The man is named Terrance, and he comes bearing news that Junior has been longlisted for space exploration, meaning that he’ll be one of the first people to temporarily live in the Installation — a kind of space station set up by the private corporation Terrance works for. As it would turn out, Junior does eventually get selected — but where does that leave Hen? Well, thankfully, Terrance has a replacement Junior for her that acts, talks and thinks just as the real Junior does. And, that, my friends, is where the goings get freaky. Hen gets more and more reserved and standoff-ish as Junior prepares for his day in the sun, and pretty soon the duo is fighting just without resorting to throwing things at each other. Many different aspects of life during the war are touched upon and could be used as a study point, e.g., evacuation: what was evacuation? Who was evacuated? Where did they go? A son and grandson of actors, Michael has acting in his blood and enjoys collaborating and performing live adaptations of his books at festivals, concerts and theatres.

The story takes place over eight chapters and is easily manageable for more competent KS2 readers due to the simpler sentence structures and choice of vocabulary, although the use of topic-specific vocabulary provides good learning and discussion opportunities. The book is also a good one to read aloud but does require some confidence and creativity due to the variety of characters (children, men and women) with different accents (London, West Country and German). Friend or Foe would be suitable for class based reading in year 4 and 5, and independent reading in year 6. The theme of the story offers the opportunity for cross-curricular work in history when studying WW2, especially evacuees. A trip to the War museum to look at the different planes in the story could be a great trip for Literacy and History. Friend or Foe may not be a Childs choice of book to read, however once reading the children will love it and be eager to read on. Many activities can be created such as: The style of writing was poor, I felt, but there are plenty of strong opportunities for role-play and research around the book related to WW2. Friend or Foe is a 1982 British independent film that was written and directed by John Krish and produced by Gordon Scott for the Children's Film Foundation. [2] The film, which was given a theatrical release in April 1982, is based on the 1977 children's novel by the same name by Michael Morpurgo. It stars John Bardon, Stacy Tendeter, and John Holmes and concerns two young boys who are evacuated from London during World War II. The source novel was inspired by the evacuations of civilians in Britain during World War II. Morpurgo added: “Storymakers and storytellers like Barrie, and like all the previous winners of this award, have given us the hope and faith children need, we need, to keep flying, have sustained us through dark and troubled times, have banished doubt. The novel is set during World War II and follows two evacuees to the West Country. The boys find themselves on a farm. “They were no longer going away, they were arriving.” Life is all about perspective. The boys turned a negative into a positive.The boys encounter two German airmen hiding in the woods who are the only ones to have survived the crash. One of them saves one of the boys from drowning in the pond. The airmen both speak English and let the boys go, but ask them not to tell. The boys have a crisis of conscience as a result, but eventually decide to protect the Germans. When one of the airmen injures himself, he lets the boys 'capture' him, as he needs medical attention. The boys then become local heroes. The second German is later captured. The boys' foster family realise what happened. but are understanding of the situation.
