The Koss Porta Pro has been on the market for over 30 years but remains immensely popular amongst audiophiles. We have tested and recommended it for years, and we can’t believe how good they sound every time. Koss made a headphone many years ago that others still can’t compete with today. Released in August 2020, Sony's WH-1000XM4 headphones have remained a firm favorite. They were voted as the best wireless headphones at TechRadar Choice Awards in 2021 and even though the WH-1000XM5s have since been unveiled in 2022, we still think they're the better all-rounder. You want class-leading active noise cancelling and audio: The range may have plateaued a bit with the WH-1000XM5, but they’ve plateaued at the top of the pile. It's not just style over function either, as the drivers inside the chunky ear cups have been angled to be parallel to your ears (rather than parallel to the outside of the earcups) for seamless timing and precise sound. As mentioned, another consideration is in-ear fit. We all have different ears, and some earphones fit better than others. If you've had trouble getting in-ears to stay in place in the past, consider a pair that comes with multiple eartips or earfins that sit against the ear to help add stability. It's also worth considering foam eartips (which sometimes ship with earphones, but are less common than silicone) because they expand in the canal to create a stronger seal, much like earplugs. They also often have the benefit of increasing the bass response.

If you prefer true wireless in-ear buds, then the Sony WF-1000XM4s are the perfect option for most people. Voted best in-ear headphones at the TechRadar Choice Awards in 2021 – the same year they were launched – they have continued to top our list and for good reasons. For a large part, I agree with that statement. They set the bar at 90-95% of what the far more expensive headphones can do and are top-shelf performers even when you remove price from the equation. The resolution, imaging, and separation are lovely, and this is a great gateway into amazing planar headphone sound without breaking the bank. For music, Technics’ high-spec buds perform better than almost anything else. The ANC quality and battery life are more average, but they're also future-proofed on features. You need them to actually last all day: Even at its best, the battery life available here is nothing special – long-haul flights are a non-starter.This is our go-to headphone for soundstage and spacing, displaying live and orchestral music with vivid reality. On the other hand, good audiophile headphones will be comfortable for long listening periods.Consider how these headphones are designed to be worn and the materials, ventilation, padding, and weight impact comfort. Consider Your Budget - The Best Headphones Ain't Cheap Much of this obsession comes down to audiophiles (and those that appreciate fidelity in general) having a deeper understanding of how the physical hardware they use affects the reproduction of their music. It is easy to become obsessed with minor annoyances in recordings, often easily overlooked by a layperson. The static noise problem usually goes away when changing the audio format to 24 bits. Disable All Sound Enhancements In our Sony WH-1000XM5 review we said that the XM5s offer "class-leading noise-cancelling features and well-balanced audio". However, "a steeper price point and similar functionality to earlier models make the Sony WH-1000XM5 headphones an ever-so-slightly tougher sell than before."

These deliver awesome detail and balance, and pretty good ANC, along with other smart features. As do lots of other cans here, but the PX8 look and feel better than basically anything else. These will be out of reach for most headphone enthusiasts at a shade under four grand. Nonetheless, they are a stunning achievement from the French manufacturer. I got 30 minutes of head time in a custom listening booth at High End in Munich in 2019, and my jaw hit the floor. I was skeptical going in but coming out; I had to agree that nothing I had heard previously sounded like this.
