About this deal

Again, our issue isn't as much with the score's accuracy as it is with how useful it can be when you don't clearly know how to improve it. Our score hasn't moved even with a lot more hills and mileage increases over the past six weeks, for example. But it also steals another of the Fenix's former exclusive points, too, with each Epix Pro model featuring the flashlight that was previously only found on the Fenix 7X. I was an AW owner for 2 years (until the battery died) between owning Garmin Fenix watches “all my life” and during that time I was missing most of the features of a Garmin Fenix. Mostly the recovery metrics and the load metrics. Because I really use that to shape my weekly training. And again, as a reminder – every single software feature outlined above is coming to the existing Epix & Fenix 7 series units. Note that Redshift is only on Epix series units, not a Fenix 7 series display thing (either base or Pro models).

Anecdotally, we would say at least half our sessions saw the FR965 and Epix Pro finish with virtually identical average HR and maximum HR figures, and this would also be within 1-2 beats of our chest strap, as shown above. Whether this is worth it for you, then, entirely depends on whether you believe the differences we'll outline below are worth it. For me, the very few edge cases where AMOLED is worse are far outweighed by all the cases where it’s far better – especially in dim lighting conditions (like indoors, or the entire time period of October to April in Amsterdam, where I live). Still, if you’ve tried current-gen AMOLED displays and it’s not your cup of tea, the Fenix 7 Pro is the exact same watch feature-wise with a MIP display instead. As with other Garmin metrics, this is an amalgamated figure that's based on VO2 Max, training history, and more. Which is best? Overall, we'd say that's the pattern with this latest sensor. It's by no means a huge leap forward - which is likely why this isn't being branded openly as Elevate V5 (yet) - but it is, at least some of the time, just that bit more accurate. Garmin has also built up a frankly ludicrous set of insights and sports profiles around this very solid HR and GPS performance. But honestly, that situation just doesn’t really exist very often in real life. If I need to see my watch – any watch – I’m generally turning my wrist just slightly to see it. It’s kinda that simple – no matter the display type. This is probably a better representation of the two side-by-side:

And here’s what’s inside: The watch, a USB-C Garmin charging cable, and some paperwork that tells you nothing of value. As we've mentioned in other sections, we wouldn't necessarily consider these reasons to upgrade, because it's very likely they get added to the Epix 2 in a software update soon, but they exist nonetheless. The Epix Pro comes in three sizes, has an AMOLED display and is designed to be worn 24 hours a day to collect fitness and wellness data, according to Garmin. It's always a bit annoying when you see a watch face crop up on another Garmin and you scroll through to find out you don't have it in yours. Now, the other single area in sport where it can be more challenging is if you plan to mount your Epix on your bike handlebars. In that case, depending on how smooth the roads are, the watch will go to sleep when off-wrist after a period of time (under a minute). Albeit, on bumpy roads it never really goes to sleep. This is true of other AMOLED displays from other companies too – including Samsung, Apple, Fitbit, Google, and more. But more on that in the sport section.Seamlessly built into the top of the Epix Pro's case, this works exactly as it does on the Fenix 7X - and, now, all editions of the Fenix 7 Pro range. From what we can work out, this isn't technically the next iteration of Garmin's Elevate V4 sensor that features on the standard Epix 2, but the two watches are very different in how they look on the rear.

There's also a more simplified version available, too, letting you ditch those additional stats to show off time, date, and heart rate only if things get a bit too busy for you. Finally, and if we analyse the prices of the different models, we notice that the prices of 42mm are almost similar to those of 47mm.You can therefore opt for a dial size of 47mm, if your wrist is large enough for this size. This is a notable change in Garmin’s approach. Up till now, Garmin mostly only created sport/profiles when they had specific data metrics for each sport (e.g., stroke rate while kayaking, or run length for water skiing). But that got to be more and more annoying when you wanted to simply use sport profiles for categorization purposes. It led me to use the cross-country skiing profile for outdoors ice skating this past winter, and others to use gym mode for basketball, and so on. All the while their competitors like Suunto and Polar offered tons of sports modes, albeit without the sport-specific data.

Generally speaking, though, we've found you'll get around 5-6 days of decent use with the Epix Pro's always-on display turned on, with the option to extend that to around 14-16 days if you turn it off. Some of the best Garmin watch faces are the ones that manage to present your stats and data in a really nice, clean manner. Otron definitely fits that bill.

If you're all about the weather, this is a face that does a really nice job of displaying that metrological data. We still rate the Apple Watch Ultra as one of the best smartwatches you can buy, and it could be the better choice if you're predominantly looking for a smartwatch that has tons of apps and a stunning screen. Garmin still opts against adding solar charging powers, which was absent from the original Epix as well, but does now add in an LED flashlight, which does seem a touch brighter than the one that debuted on the Fenix 7X. The Fenix and Epix series of watches have always been Garmin's most complete when it comes to sports profiles - and the Pro edition adds even more over the original Epix 2.
