Alighieri, Dante; Björkesson, Ingvar (2006). Den gudomliga komedin (Divine Comedy), comments by Ingvar Björkesson. Levande Litteratur (in Swedish). Natur & Kultur. p.425. ISBN 978-91-27-11468-5. The devil runs away in fear from a suffragette carrying a "Votes For Women" flyer in this British anti-suffrage postcard from 1900. Accessing the "A humble request" option will lead to another objective to either shut down the radio transmission or to restore the Enclave Radio station. Yet Lucifer and the three traitors are silent, and the scene is solemn. We can interpret the silence in many ways. In one regard, silence is reverential and respectful. While other sinners explain their circumstances that led to their crimes, the sins of Lucifer, Brutus, Cassius, and Judas require no explanation. Even to modern readers, these three men are notorious for their treacherous actions. In a way, Dante’s decision to keep these figures silent reinforces that their crimes will never be forgivable or redeemable. They will languish forever, unable to communicate any pain or remorse. Their resignation imbues them with a more composed, civilized appearance against sinners in the earlier pits of hell. Not sure about Batch and Mosey. I think they are probables but it wouldn’t be a huge surprise if they end up in Manchester and Nottingham. In the Bible, the Book of Isaiah 14:12 reads: "How art thou fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning! How art thou cut down to the ground, which didst weaken the nations." This is a direct reference to God casting out Satan from heaven. "Lucifer, the 'morning star' is the expression with which Isaiah defines a future king of Babylon," Montesano said. "The fathers of the early medieval church, however, elaborated the figure of Lucifer far beyond the biblical text, making him the rebel angel and transforming him into the paradigm of pride as the capital sin." The Malebranche ( Italian: [ˌmaleˈbraŋke]; "Evil Claws") [1] are the demons in the Inferno of Dante's Divine Comedy who guard Bolgia Five of the Eighth Circle ( Malebolge). They figure in Cantos XXI, XXII, and XXIII. Vulgar and quarrelsome, their duty is to force the corrupt politicians ( barrators) to stay under the surface of a boiling lake of pitch. Canto XXVII is entirely dedicated to the encounter between Dante and Guido da Montefeltro, a Ghibelline famous for his leadership and astuteness in military affairs. Dante’s encounter with Guido is characterised by the bestial sounds which Guido’s voice produces through the flame before it is able to reach the flame’s tip and be heard as human language. Before identifying himself Guido wishes to know the present political situation of the Romagna, his native region. After Dante has answered, Guido identifies himself and says that he is willing to tell his story because he believes Dante and Virgil to be damned souls who would not be able to return to the world and diminish his fame. Other experts disagree. "The goat, which until the Middle Ages was barely linked to demonology, assumed a new role [around this time]." Montesano said. "According to some scholars, this new role comes mainly from its association with Nordic myths. Others say it might derive from the pagan god Pan, while British historian Ronald Hutton thinks it has more to do with neo-pagan revival of modern — not Medieval — times."

Brand, Peter; Pertile, Lino (1999). The Cambridge History of Italian Literature (2nded.). Cambridge University Press. pp.63–64. ISBN 978-0-521-66622-0. Lucifer also has three faces and three mouths, each one slowly gnawing on Brutus, Cassius, and Judas. Similar to the giants, Lucifer is unable to communicate with Dante and Virgil because his mouth is occupied. In earlier cantos, Dante and Virgil speak openly with sinners about their sins and punishments — or, at the very least, sinners are able to cry out in pain and agony. Other interpretations of evil gods in hell and the underworld mirror these scenes of suffering. In so many interpretations of the underworld, hell is like a slaughterhouse. Canto XXV opens with Vanni Fucci’s obscene gesture towards God, and with his punishment which follows from this. This prompts Dante- poeta’s invective against Pistoia. In Canto XXV we find that guarding the seventh bolgiais the centaur Cacus, separated from the other centaurs (which we had met in Canto XII) because of his theft of four bulls and four cows from Hercules, by whom he was then killed. The canto is then dominated by Dante’s witnessing the horrific metamorphoses of three Florentine thieves: Agnello dei Brunelleschi, Buoso Donati, and Francesco Cavalcanti. We are also told that Cianfa Donati and Puccio dei Galigai (‘Sciancato’) are also part of this Florentine group. Restoring Enclave Radio instead will make it available as a new radio station, but will make the safe inaccessible. As Dante enters the ninth circle, the temperature becomes cold ( Inferno, 34.29). The ninth circle is home to the most irredeemable sinners: the treacherous. Lucifer, originally an angel who betrayed God, is also punished here. John Yueh-Han Yieh, One Teacher: Jesus' Teaching Role in Matthew's Gospel Report (Walter de Gruyter, 2005) p. 65; Robert Walter Funk, The acts of Jesus: the search for the authentic deeds of Jesus (Harper San Francisco, 1998) pp. 129–270. I did not die, and I was not alive; think for yourself, if you have any wit, what I became, deprived of life and death.”

In the ninth circle, the lines between life and death feel blurred. Concrete notions of humanity and being have slipped away as we try to comprehend the suffering of the giants and Lucifer. During the 20th century, the devil continued to be re-invented by writers and filmmakers, placing him in the guise of mysterious strangers, smart businessmen and even children, as in the 1976 horror movie "The Omen". At about 6:00 p.m. on Saturday evening, Virgil and Dante begin their escape from Hell by clambering down Satan's ragged fur, feet-first. When they reach Satan's genitalia, the poets pass through the center of the universe and of gravity from the Northern Hemisphere of land to the Southern Hemisphere of water. When Virgil changes direction and begins to climb "upward" towards the surface of the Earth at the antipodes, Dante, in his confusion, initially believes they are returning to Hell. Virgil indicates that the time is halfway between the canonical hours of Prime (6:00 a.m.) and Terce (9:00 a.m.) — that is, 7:30a.m. of the same Holy Saturday which was just about to end. Dante is confused as to how, after about an hour and a half of climbing, it is now apparently morning. Virgil explains that it is as a result of passing through the Earth's center into the Southern Hemisphere, which is twelve hours ahead of Jerusalem, the central city of the Northern Hemisphere (where, therefore, it is currently 7:30p.m.). Hazel in southend sees it as a 5-3 Devils win, where as Pete goes for his now obligatory prediction of a Devils winning scoreline. Allen Mandelbaum on Canto XXI, lines 112–114: "the bridges of Hell crumbled 1266 years ago – at a time five hours later than the present hour yesterday. Dante held that Christ died after having completed 34 years of life on this earth – years counted from the day of the Incarnation. Luke affirms that the hour of His death was the sixth – that is, noon. If this is the case, then Malacoda is referring to a time which is 7 AM, five hours before noon on Holy Saturday." [89]Few cantos of the Commediahave generated as much scholarly interest as InfernoXXVI. The lofty words with which Ulysses convinces his men to sail beyond the Pillars of Hercules are among the most well-known of the entire poem. Yet they are also some of the most problematic. Taken on their own, they seem to be a noble and righteous statement regarding human nature: humans are meant to pursue virtue and knowledge. In the context of Ulysses’ speech, however, their noble and righteous character cannot be taken for granted. Indeed, the scholarly debate concerning the figure of Ulysses has largely centred on whether or not Dante presents his motives for sailing past the Pillars of Hercules in pursuit of truth as morally good, or blame-worthy.
