About this deal

Horror fiction tends to fail in the absence of empathy, and Chizmar knows that well. The killing and subsequent descriptions of the serial killer’s victims are there, and they will make fans of true crime very happy, but the author also takes time to painstakingly present the town of Edgewood and its residents in a way that makes readers care for them. These are mostly good people—good parents, friends, and neighbors—living through a nightmare. Readers see that, and they feel their pain… and that makes them care much more about what happens in the story, both the real one and the fictional.

Book Review: ‘Chasing the Boogeyman’ Will Have You Double Book Review: ‘Chasing the Boogeyman’ Will Have You Double

If the house with green shutters and the ancient weeping willow tree represented the center of my world growing up—the hub of my “wheel of life,” as I later began to think of it—then each road, big or small, leading away from that house resembled a spoke in that ever-turning wheel, every one of them fanning out in a different direction, eventually running out of space to roam, and serving to collectively define the outer boundaries of my beloved hometown. I was the youngest of five children—following in the footsteps of three sisters (Rita, Mary, and Nancy) and the eldest of the bunch, my brother (John)—by a margin of nearly eight years. In other words, I was probably a mistake. I’ve never actually asked my parents if that was the case, but I’ve heard it enough times from my siblings to mostly believe it to be true. Regardless, it never really mattered. The New York Times bestselling coauthor of Gwendy’s Button Box brings his signature prose to this story of small-town evil that combines the storytelling of Stephen King with the true-crime suspense of Michelle McNamara. Chasing The Boogeyman is an engaging and cleverly told suspenseful mystery, and I look forward to reading more of Chizmar’s work.

For any horror fan, there’s a bonus. Chizmar makes several references to classic horror films and authors throughout the book— Halloween , Jaws , and many references to Stephen King. In real life, Chizmar coauthored a novella with King, Gwendy’s Button Box (2017). I should also mention that I don't believe for a minute that the detective in charge of this case would have spilled so much confidential information to a curious 22 year old writer that just happens to be interested. A lot of "If I tell you this you can't say anything, okay?" type of bullshit. THAT. WOULD. NEVER. HAPPEN. Overall, there’s nothing negative I can say about Chasing the Boogeyman. Readers will love it, regardless of if you’re a true crime, horror, mystery, or thriller fan. It has all the pieces and is one of my only five-star books of the year. I can’t wait to read more from Chizmar. Chizmar’s arrival in Edgewood coincides with the murder of a local girl, 15-year-old Natasha Gallagher. Chizmar went to high school with her brother, Joshua. While he knew the Gallaghers, he wasn’t friends with them. Over the next four months, from June 2, 1988, to Oct. 31, 1988, four girls ages 16 to 18, are found dead. All are residents of Edgewood. Their bodies are found dumped nearby with the left ear cut off and missing. All of the girls, except for Natasha, were sexually assaulted. No evidence is left behind and these girls all vanished into thin air. Natasha is taken from her bedroom, another girl happened to be left alone a few minutes to wait for a friend, one girl is taken from her driveway late at night, and another who was dropped off right in front of her house on Halloween night. This is why the killer is given the moniker, “The Boogeyman.” “Morning fog” by SalTheColourGeek is licensed under CC BY 2.0

Chasing the Boogeyman is a fictional account of the brutal killings that took place in the author's hometown of Edgewood during the late 1980s. Teenage girls would first go missing and then turn up mutilated and posed. Before long, the town is in a frenzy of fear and suspicion. While the police work feverishly to catch the serial killer, Richard Chizmar is drawn to the case and his firsthand account eventually becomes the book we're reading.
