Away from such murky terrain, Martin sounds blissfully happy with his family in Andorra where he is working in a new investment business and about to publish his first book. But let’s get into another edition of In the Drops, which this week features colourful Rapha kit, Dan Martin’s new book and ketone shots.

Robyn Davidson is an editorial assistant at Cyclist who mainly covers the pro side of the sport and can often be spotted at bike races. Chased by Pandas] is not a conventional study of wins, losses and conquering mountains but overcoming the mental challenges of a sport into which he was seemingly born’ – The Times There were moments when I was in France and I was like: ‘Maybe they’re right, maybe I should stop eating,’” Dan Martin says as he remembers an early example of him refusing to surrender to the unhealthy demands of professional cycling. Martin, who recorded top‑10 finishes at five Grand Tours and won stages at the Tour de France, Giro d’Italia and Vuelta a España, had been rejected by Dave Brailsford and British Cycling despite being a national junior champion. He turned pro in France instead where he soon discovered a sport in which cyclists are often treated as machines rather than human beings.I found the structure made it difficult for me to know where I was in the timeline. I have not read a cycling biography structured by topic as opposed to riders progression through his career. This felt a bit disjointed to me and I couldn’t reconcile whether Dan has been gifted from the start (most certainly!) and what influenced him to improvements that were followed by the rewards due. It sounds like he has sympathy for young cyclists today. “My sympathy lies with the guys who have to make more sacrifices than I ever did just to be in the peloton. Just to be on the start line in the Tour you have to do altitude training camps, honed nutrition, you need to be super, super, skinny. You have to be doing what Team Sky did. But I got top 10 in the Tour de France, training out of my front door every day. Today that’s not possible. The time is the early 2000s, the place south west English midlands, not far from where Dan grew up, the scene a British Cycling seniors race, five or six laps of an undulating circuit with an off circuit hill finish, about 80/90ks, I was a veteran making up the bunch. Curiously, while Chased by Pandas paints Martin’s story in pretty pastels, Carrey’s 2017 article was a more nuanced study in light and shadow. It was explicit in the way it talked about doping, that was an important part of the article, it justified why Carrey saw Martin as a hero, he was a guy who chose to reject doping, with Carrey linking that stance to the careers of Romain Bardet and Thibaut Pinot.

That’s something I can understand, and I feel like too many cycling books I’ve read seem to centre on the themes of either suffering or doping. Also, SPOILER ALERT! The Panda chasing him! There was one, once! Admittedly a great story, and I understand that encounter was on his mind throughout his career, but the title suggested a greater influence & appearance. This is Dan Martin’s long-awaited autobiography, full of ‘the warmth, sharp insights and vivid colour of his 14-year career’ (Guardian)Dan Martin: ‘I retired still loving riding my bike, and loving racing, and that was a very fortunate position.’ Photograph: Tom Jenkins/The Guardian Chased by Pandas] is not a conventional study of wins, losses and conquering mountains but overcoming the mental challenges of a sport into which he was seemingly born' The Times

Halloween is a one-day holiday, but not for me. I’m already thinking about dyeing my hair more auburn, heading to the pumpkin patch (the photo above is from last year) and engaging in my annual tradition of watching Scream. Chased by Pandas] is not a conventional study of wins, losses and conquering mountains but overcoming the mental challenges of a sport into which he was seemingly born’ The Timesthe most rational hypothesis was that there was an oily residue on the road at that point and the dampness in the air had made it slippery. The irrational hypothesis was that it was down to fate. This explanation was both comforting and unsatisfactory, but I liked it. It was written that I would win in 2013 and lose in 2014…
