About this deal

Randolph Schwabe was a well-known British artist and professor at the Slade School of Art, but during the war he worried that his German heritage might cause him problems. Nevertheless, he was approached to create a Hall of Remembrance painting for the British government. Schwabe suggested that he cover land subjects, and created Voluntary Land Workers in a Flax-field, Podington, Northamptonshire. The Hall of Remembrance paintings were supposed to cover a broad cross-section of war experience. However, Schwabe was the only artist to make a painting for the commission that focused on women and women’s work. Dave's work is inspired by his own personal experiences and events involving his comrades, or they are often based on requests from the public; usually to remember actions or events that they, or their loved ones, were involved in. The installation was designed for its first showing at the 20 th European Patchwork Meeting in 2014 with the intention that it would be added to and changed as the project developed. I decided to line the work chronologically. A section of lace or line of stitch would carry through one to another of the pieces in sequence. Wives, husbands, or civil partners of those who have died as a result of their service in His Majesty’s Armed Forces. The plastic-free poppy is created from bespoke red and green paper manufactured by specialist papermaker James Cropper. Explore the relationship between your Cadet section and Remembrance with resources tailored for RAF, Army, Navy, Fire, Police and St John’s Ambulance Cadets. Elsewhere, Keren Cytter’s video Fashions (2019) portrays the fictional interactions of a mother, daughter and grandmother who live together in a flat. The work examines contempt for older people as one of the fundamental precepts of fascist dogma. Moreover, it invites viewers to reflect on the transgenerational emotional devastation wreaked by fascism and the ideology it propagated even after the war in publications such as the popular child-rearing guide Die deutsche Mutter und ihr erstes Kind (The German Mother and Her First Child, 1934), of which millions of copies were printed. Its author, the Munich-based doctor and Nazi supporter Johanna Haarer, made only minor alterations to the postwar editions that continued to be issued until the late 1980s. Among other things, the book advised mothers to ignore the emotional needs of their babies and to keep touch to a minimum. Attachment theory assumes that this behaviour can lead to lasting emotional disturbances handed down to subsequent generations. The manifest contempt for old people in Fashions shows an intergenerational incapacity for emotional empathy that appears uncomfortably prescient in the light of current discourse around the treatment of the elderly during the coronavirus crisis.
