Antihydral (Methenamine) for palmar hyperhidrosis - A guide

Precision is key in avoiding ripping off the skin. Slow down and make your movements more static rather than throwing your hands onto jugs. You can practice placing your hands with precision on a hold and don’t move them around after. Balm and Salve are both common descriptors for hand care products that, while commonly used, are nearly interchangeable. Some seem to think a balm is by definition a harder consistency than a salve. This would make ClimbOn a balm, and something like Joshua Tree Climbing Salve a salve (duh!). However, Joshua Tree Climbing Salve is a similar consistency to Badger Balm, clouding this definition. Other people suggest a salve is merely a balm with herbal ingredients added, making many of the products on this list a salve and a balm. Again, something to figure out for yourself. There are other, more complicated options for people who experience this. Methylated Spirits

Taping the split tightly shut will also allow you to continue climbing. A Band-Aid or bandage made for the purpose is best, but climbing tape will do until you get home. It works but feels very strange to have absolutely no moisure on your finger tips. A week or so after using it a lot you can lose great big chunks of skin, and the tips often go yellow. The effects appear usually within 3-10 days, lasting also for about that amount of time after you stop using it. After you're satisfied with the results/side effects (which I'll explain soon), you can begin to use it every other day, or every two days, whatever works for you. For me, after six years, I'm more like "shit I'm starting to sweat again, better use Antihydral for a few days" and so on. As I said, the effects last up to 10 days. The more days you use it, the more "not sweaty" days you get after stopping. The skin can heal nicely on its own, and faster than you think, as long as you provide it with the necessary conditions. A very thin layer of cream is applied to the fingertips and palms, and is left on for anywhere from 15 minutes to overnight. Be very careful to avoid joint creases. Any remaining residue is washed off in the morning, or after the desired time (e.g. 15 minutes) is up.

Sometimes it will wrinkle so much it can begin to hurt a little. But to be honest, this side effect is so harmless to me at least, I don't even think about it. It just there, be advised. If you intend on climbing more that day then tape it up and go but once you’re done, take the tape OFF. Letting the air at your wound is one of the best things you can do speed up recovery. Rhino skin tip juice is the strongest stuff you can buy, 12% methenamine I think https://www.rhinoskinsolutions.com/product/mikeys-tip-juice/. There is a cream talked about just called antihydral with 13% methenamine https://squamishclimbingmagazine.ca/antihydral-skin-doping-for-climbers/ but you have to get it shipped. Not sure if there's cheaper stuff with the same concentrations! After a while of climbing, you can come to have an awareness of how hot your skin is. This is a very useful thing to learn personally as everyone’s skin will react totally differently and you may find that on some days you need way more rest than others.

So how do we maintain our skin for climbing?

Of course, your treatment will also depend on how deep your flapper is. If it’s really deep, it’s good to clean it regularly and keep it covered at least for a day to prevent infection.
