About this deal

Her attitude makes for a gripping read. When she is offered a job as the wardrobe assistant to a touring theatre company, she wastes no time in getting to know the actors and the support staff, and heading away with them on a national tour. She dreams of joining the cast, but contents herself with becoming an essential member of the company. When both the leading lady and the understudy are unable to perform, Freya is the only logical replacement - but what will happen when she makes her first appearance in front of a paying audience?

All in all, the book mostly reminded me of the fanfictions I would write when I was fourteen. The writing was very on the nose, the plotline very predictable and everything went way too smoothly for the main character. The Golden Age time period of A Sky Painted Gold was just one of many things that I really enjoyed about this book. Wood nails the excitement and wistfulness that I tend to associate with F. Scott Fitzgerald. The writing in this book was beautifully effortless. I could easily read huge chunks in one sitting without feeling like any time had passed at all. Big love to Laura Wood too, for showcasing so many UK cities that are not London. It made me very happy when my respective hometown and university cities, Nottingham and Durham, were part of the tour. In the Autumn of 1931, eighteen-year-old Freya Trevelyan runs away from her home in Cornwall to follow her dream of becoming an actress. When she is invited to join a theatrical company about to head out on tour, Freya thinks the path to success is clear, and, amidst all the glamour and bustle of stage life, she finds - for the first time - a place to belong. But can reality ever live up to her expectations? What if her life - and falling in love - turn out to be nothing like she planned? An enchanting coming of age romance about following your dreams - even when they aren't quite what you expected. LW: Well I am obsessed with Cornwall it’s a problem… My mum’s side of the family are from Cornwall and my grandparents lived in Cornwall as I was growing up so we used to go there all the time. It’s a really special place for me like I have a real affection for it. But also specifically in Cornwall there are places that the book is about and the main place is St. Michael’s Mount which is in Marazion in Cornwall and that’s what the Cardew island is based on so it’s like the island that’s joined to the mainland by the causeway and when the tide comes in like it’s cut off and when the tide goes out then you can walk across to it and when I saw that I just knew that I had to write something about it because it feels really magical it has that kind of magical quality that I wanted the book to have.Everyone believes that Salil Singh killed his girlfriend, Andrea Bell, five years ago—except Pippa Fitz-Amobi. Like Laura Woods other books, I fell in love with all of the characters and was honestly so so sad when I finished the book - I don’t think I’ve ever been so sad to have finished a book. I just didn’t want it to end! LW: Yeah although I think it’s really nice how into the clothes everyone gets about it like I think everyone really… it’s such a special period for fashion and everyone really likes it.

But, as she grows closer to the Cardews, is she abandoning her own ambitions… And is there something darker lurking at the heart of the Cardew family? Laura Wood is the winner of the Montegrappa Scholastic Prize for New Children’s Writing. Her first YA novel A Sky Painted Gold was shortlisted for the 2019 YA Book Prize, 2018 BAMB Readers’ Awards and the 2019 Romantic Novelists’ Association’s Awards.

It’s early evening and it’s starting to get dark now. The lights strung above us in a looping zigzag shine white against a royal blue sky. We’re walking further into a residential bit of the city, and the windows in the tall houses glow, warm and welcoming. Some contain glimpses of decorated trees, of brightly coloured paper chains, and jewel-like glass ornaments. [...]While I wish the romance in this story had more depth and moments in general, I was still greatly engrossed and enchanted by this tale. It wrapped up a bit too easily for my liking, but I also just greatly appreciate a story with a lovely happy ending when escaping from my own reality.
