About this deal

Once again, AJ Pearce has provided us with a beautifully escapist read. Yours Cheerfully is a balm for the soul." —Tracy Rees, author of Amy Snow The women in the factories are paid less, expected to sort out childcare, run households and basically be available to work any shift over a 24-hour period. Emmy can see the strain this is having and her conscience plays with her. Can she really promote and encourage women to work in such an imbalanced environment? Can she, as a journalist, do more?

Aside from her work for the magazine, Emmy also volunteers with the fire service. Loyalty and friendship are very important to Emmy, as is so very obvious in her relationship with her boyfriend Charles and childhood friend Bunty. Emmy very much believes that everyone needs to pull together, everyone must make sacrifices, including herself. Mrs. Edwards of Woman Today is a memorable figure and a role model for Emmy. Why does she make such an impression on Emmy? Yours Cheerfully is a testament to the strength of women and the importance of lifting each other up, even in the most challenging times.Following the departure of the formidable Editor, Henrietta Bird, fromWoman’s Friend magazine, things are looking up for Emmeline Lake as she takes on the challenge of becoming a young wartime advice columnist. Her relationship with boyfriend Charles is blossoming, while Emmy’s best friend Bunty, is still reeling from the very worst of the Blitz, but bravely looking to the future. Together, the friends are determined to Make a Go of It. The best possible antidote for the blahs, the doldrums, all slumps, all dumps . . . Loved. Every. Word.' - Bonnie Garmus, author of Lessons in Chemistry Read more about nurseries and the role they played in World War II in Britain via the East End Women’s Museum at https://eastendwomensmuseum.org/blog/2018/8/7/women-babies-and-bombs-how-day-nurseries-contributed-to-working-womens-lives-during-wwii. Even though Yours Cheerfully can be read as a stand-alone, I recommend reading Dear Mrs. Bird first for a richer reading experience. Dear Mrs Bird centers around the London Blitz and its affect on Londoners (bombings are a part of the story) and follows Emmy as she begins her journalism career, Yours Cheerfully focuses on the war effort from the perspective of women left behind and on Emmy’s activism. Yours Cheerfully is very much a “day in the life” type of story. Compare Mr. Terry and Mr. Rice. Are they equally at fault in the issues facing the women at Chandlers?

In an unreliable world, I’m glad we can depend on AJ Pearce to deliver a delectable read." — Annie Barrows, co-author of The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society Thanks #NetGalley @ScribnerBooks for a complimentary eARC of #YoursCheerfully upon my request. All opinions are my own. Full of the cheerful bravery and good humor that makes AJ Pearce’s writing so special, with punch-the-air moments set against the sadness and loss of war." —Julie Cohen, author of Spirited I read because books are a form of transportation, of teaching, and of connection! Books take us to places we’ve never been, they teach us about our world, and they help us to understand human experience.” Thoughtful themes include women supporting women, women and the War effort, women’s working conditions and equal wages, friendship, influence of news media on current issues, making a difference, and wartime romance.

A] charmer of a book. . . . This heartwarming novel moves through laughter and tears, romances and deaths. As she weaves historical events, slang, and popular culture into her story, Pearce brilliantly evokes the era." — Historical Novels Society Was Emmy right to suggest the parade to Anne and her friends at Chandlers? What might you try to do for the women if you were Emmy? When the Ministry of Information calls on Britain’s women’s magazines to help recruit female workers to the war effort, Emmy is thrilled to step up and help. But when she and Bunty meet a young mother who shows them the very real challenges that women war workers face, Emmy must confront a dilemma between doing her duty and standing by her friends. Meeting Anne gives Emmy a new perspective on women war workers, particularly factory workers. Why do you think Emmy was surprised by the experiences, challenges, and circumstances of the women working at Chandlers?

Eithne Farry, Mail on Sunday Absolutely lovely! And if you haven't read Dear Mrs Bird yet, do so, without delay! Mrs. Mahoney tells Emmy that “caring about getting things right is worth its weight in gold” (16). How do the staff members at Woman’s Friend express that they care about getting things right? Jill Mansell, author of Promise Me [A] charming, comforting book, which never shies away from the horrors and the losses of the war. Roins, Anna (1 October 2019). "Pearce's Dear Mrs Bird shows power of friendship". AuthorLink . Retrieved 5 October 2021.Do you ever create categories in your mind just for your own benefit? Just me?! In my own mind I think of Dear Mrs. Bird as light histfic and Yours Cheerfully as cozy histfic if that makes sense! What I’m trying to communicate is that I see a different degree of war intensity between the two books, but they are both upbeat and charming in tone. In 1941, Britain had been at war for two years and London had just survived the Blitz—a brutal series of German air raids that dropped more than 12,000 metric tons of bombs from September 1940 to May 1941, killing nearly 30,000 civilians. What do you imagine Londoners were feeling and thinking at this time? Discuss the competing demands Emmy faces in her work, such as the Ministry recruitment campaign versus the women workers’ welfare. In what ways does Emmy try to strike a balance? Does she succeed? AJ Pearce is the author of the Sunday Times bestselling Dear Mrs Bird. She was born in Hampshire, UK, and studied at the University of Sussex and Northwestern University in the USA

An absolute delight! I loved Dear Mrs. Bird and was thrilled to spend more time with Emmy and Bunty in Yours, Cheerfully. AJ Pearce shines a light on the hardships that women factory workers faced during World War II, an echo to the plight of working mothers today. Endearing, poignant, and relevant, this uplifting novel is a treat!" —Janet Skeslien Charles, author of The Paris Library Yours Cheerfully: the best possible antidote for the blahs, the doldrums, all slumps, but also effective against letdowns and general malaise. Loved. Every. Word." — Bonnie Garmus, author of Lessons in Chemistry But when a glamorous new owner arrives, everything changes. As the Honourable Mrs Porter tries to charm her way around the rest of the team, Emmy realizes that she plans to destroy everything readers love about the magazine. Amanda-Jane Pearce (born 1964) is an English author. She is known for her Sunday Times Bestselling historical fiction series The Emmy Lake Chronicles, beginning with Dear Mrs Bird in 2018. As Emmy grapples with these questions, and with the turn of events in her personal life, she has to dig deep and find the strength to be true to her own beliefs but also be mindful of the chaos descending on the world around her.London, November 1941. Her relationship with boyfriend Charles is blossoming, while Emmy’s best friend Bunty, still reeling from the very worst of the Blitz, is bravely looking to the future. Together, the friends are determined to Make a Go of It. You’ll hear about what I’m up to with my books, writing and research, as well as novels I’ve enjoyed, old magazines I’ve unearthed, and general cheerfulness all round. Pearce is from Hampshire. She attended secondary school in Basingstoke. [1] She went on to graduate with a Bachelor of Arts degree in American Studies and History from the University of Sussex. She studied abroad in the United States at Northwestern University in Illinois. She worked in entertainment marketing and publishing for an engineering magazine before going into writing, a hobby she enjoyed as a child and rediscovered in 2005. She honed her creative writing skills through classes with the Arvon Foundation. I like a series that follows one character (as opposed to other series that rotate the protagonist of each story). We notice Emmeline’s growth as a competent and confident columnist, observe as she’s challenged by the unfairness of women’s work conditions, and cheer for her actions and involvement. Although Emmy has a fiance, the romance is not a main focus of the story.
