About this deal

Apart from that if you look at historical pictures of uniforms of the napolionic era there are lanyards all over the shop! Started in the 18th century as a means of identifying Corporals who wore linen ribbons on their shoulder much the same as a lanyard until chevrons were introduced to indicate rank. As much a decorative item as a useful one until friction igniters were used by the Gunners. Lanyards.co.uk are a trusted supplier of plain and custom printed lanyards, ID cards & Inserts, Card Holders, Wallets & Reels to customers large and small.

The links I posted related to lanyards being used on friction fuses some sixty years before your post says that lanyards became a form of dress. So maybe its a bad thing fleeing from the guns whilst under fire, but surrending whilst in an Army camp needs a little more explaning. Use on personal social media accounts, provided the individuals are not promoting themselves commercially. In the war years that followed, the lanyard could be used as an emergency firing lanyard forthose guns which had a trigger mechanism, allowing the gunner to stand clear of the gun's recoil.

The question of which shoulder bore the lanyard depends on the date. There is no certainty about this, but the change from the left shoulder to the right probably took place at the time of the Great War, when the bandolier was introduced, because it was worn over the left shoulder. But there are some who insist that 1924 was the date of change, when the sloping of rifles over the left shoulder would soil the white lanyard. It would guarantee that no one would ever join it! And since no such evidence exists, your storys falls flat on their face. One might even ask why other arms and corps wear lanyards?Beaded glass chain, mask chain, multifunction, sunglasses lanyard, mask holders, mask lanyard, dual Well in 1884 the cord attached to an officer's pistol was called a lanyard and that came directly from the cord attached to the sword, so I don't see why it should have changed it's name too much. As far as I can see the word 'lanyard' comes from the naval term for an attachment to a line or rigging and that dates long before Napolionic times. Pre WW1, lanyards were used by the Gunners to hold a fuze key for setting time fuses and also for all mounted troops to keep the clasp knife handy (hooves, horses, stones for the removing of).

And even an acount of a US gun being prepared to fire with the use of a lanyard in 1862 here http://www.civilwarhome.com/munfordantietamor.htm Tassel Keychain Wallet | Keychain Wristlet Wallet | Card Holder | Keyring Wallet | Coin Purse | Tassel Keyring Bangle | Personalized Charm Did you write the original or have you copied it word for word from either http://groups.msn.com/24thMissileRegtRA/lanyard.msnw http://www.atra.mod.uk/Atra/ITG/ATRP/structure/royal_artillery/ or http://www.23fdraaassociation.homestead.com/HistoryoftheLanyard.html?It used to be said, if I remember my days in the JTC, that gunners wore them as a spare should the one that fired the gun break. That seemed unlikely and in those days (40's and 50's) of battledress iI think they were merely ornaments. Many regiments and corps had coloured lanyards. I even remember one or two of the lads having clasp knives attached, while with the King's Troop RHA and RHA units if my memory serves me correctly. But Im sure you will give us all an explanation like you do, if not go and annoy some other callsign who is not up to your high standards

And even then you cant look after them, you must remember the medic who had his SA80 removed from his possesion whilst travelling the 100 yds from central lines guard room to the front gate. Whist serving with the Royal Artillery I was always told that the landyard was issued to the R.A. so that if some of the gun crew were killed any one could fire the gun by unravelling the landyard and attaching it to the breach mechanism, as it is quite long when undone. Apparantly in earlier days gunners used to attach a knife to it so they could cut the traces of any horse that was killed or injured in a team pulling the guns. There was also a fuse key attached. The lanyard was first worn by the artillery in the 19th century. It is said that certain sappers claim that gunners wear a white lanyard as a mark of cowardice for deserting their guns at some point in history but this is purely a case of leg pulling.
