About this deal

Adam Kay narrating makes this hilariously entertaining and think it's worth listening to it on audio instead of reading it as you can really feel the happy emotions and the miserable from being a junior doctor working in a obstetrician and gynaecology ward. While wishing for a third book, I can definitely see myself listening to this again next Christmas season. Review to come, once I finish this horrible essay. Seriously, no one tells you that once you get a good grade, you have to work twice as hard to make sure your work will be up to the standard you've set. Also Ethics, I have to find the energy to study for Ethics. There is plenty here for fans of the “disgusting”: the woman who used peanut butter as a lubricant, only to discover that her nut allergy affected her; the man who “desiccated himself to the human equivalent of a Ryvita” by going to a Christmas party as a turkey, wrapped in tinfoil; the woman subjected to Johnny Mathis during a forceps delivery who yelled at the radio: “No, Johnny. That is not what happens when a child is born.” Registrars like to do this kind of thing now and again to show you they've 'still got it', like your uncle squeezing himself into his Speedos despite the gasps of terrified onlookers around the hotel pool.” No, he wasn’t, baby-who-Adam-has-just-delivered. You see, Mummy went into labour while Daddy was out at a Christmas party.

A short warning before we begin: These blinks contain descriptions of blood, death, miscarriage and abortion. I like that the author still has a message to deliver despite all the humor! This was less serious than book 1 and it has less Gynecology ward entries but I liked the ending and I guess it is kind of true. As the author says, thanks to all the doctors and nurses and medical staff working day and night and sacrificing their social life to keep the rest of the people healthy! Who knows, maybe in few years, I will publish my own medical diaries! I'm so glad this was my first read of the year - funny but melancholy at times, it was a wild ride and I'm all for it. Just as good as his first book This Is Going to Hurt: Secret Diaries of a Junior Doctor this very much lives up to the hype. I was excited to be learning more about working in a hospital and dealing with serious (and some not so much!) issues. How do some of these things happen??? When executives at the author’s hospital cut costs by eliminating “inessentials,” they ended up axing things most people would consider basic amenities – the cafeteria, for one, which got replaced with vending machines.

People winding down for the holidays hardly tempers the number of accidents and emergencies – far from it.

A lot of the reward for this job comes in the form of a warm glow. It doesn’t make you look any less tired, you can’t pay the rent with it, and it’s worth a lot less than the social life you’ve traded it for, but this comforting aura of goodness and purpose definitely throws light into some dark corners and helps you withstand a lot of the shit.”Overall, this really reinforces how much we should appreciate the NHS and the staff who work their asses off every single day, not just at Christmas (my mum included). I love how passionate Kay is on this topic! With the warm storytelling and comic music he has become known for, Adam Kay presents a show that will bring plenty of festive cheer to the Palace Theatre, while reminding us all of the incredible debt we owe to the heroes of the NHS. Important Information But I still enjoyed this author’s unique brand of humor and turn of phrase. And if you have spent anytime in a hospital over the Christmas season (whether as a patient or visitor) you will probably be able to relate in some way.

Upravo to je i cilj ove knjige, da mi pacijenti budemo senzibilni prema zdrastvenim radnicima. U kojoj god se situaciji našli, nesmijemo zaboraviti da smo svi isti. For two weeks, all the normal standards of behavior are turned on their head. People go spelunking into their wardrobes to dredge up the most garish clothing they can find; they actively seek out the relatives they spend most of the year avoiding; and the concept of daily routine goes out the window, replaced with family board games and carb-induced coma-naps – this is the only time of year the British practice siesta. Thankfully this festive spin off was just as good/heart-warming/heart-breaking and kept me thoroughly entertained. I ask why. then remember why most people do most things, and thus find myself introduced - at the tender age of twenty-four - to the sexual kink of mummification.”U ovoj knjizi ipak ima i teških dijelova, posebice jedna priča koju nije uvrstio u svojoj debitanskoj knjizi. One year, the nurses in the author’s ward adorned googly eyes and red noses to several specula – devices used to open orifices – to create the world's creepiest looking reindeer. Unfortunately for the author, during his stint as a practicing doctor, he pulled the short straw six years in a row. His Christmas day consisted of plundering the fridge for leftover sprouts at 11:00 p.m. before crashing from exhaustion. A career in medicine is not just for life, it’s for Christmas, and this year half a million NHS staff will be spending the day at work. They’ll be working Christmas miracles; the least the rest of us can do is read this funny, sympathetic and eye-opening book, be overwhelmed with gratitude, and avoid off-label uses of condiments at least until the new year.
