About this deal

Jacqui Smith, Labour chief whip from 2006 to 2007, emphasised how different being a whip is to being a departmental minister: “it was much more about interactions, meetings, individuals, calls with MPs and fellow ministers” and “much more political and organisational within government than the other jobs that I had been used to.” What is ‘the whip’? And, indeed, this ambivalence, which can be so interesting when it’s explored in terms of the fluidity of gender identity and issues of power, also becomes problematic and ironically constraining when it comes to the novel’s dramatic structure. For example, why is it that Charley can trust her male lover with the truth of who she is but not the woman who claims to love her? And why is it that Charley necessarily thinks of herself as female when she not simply passes as male but seems so embedded in male culture and so infused with male habits and behavior as to be considered male and to be characterized as relishing the freedom of being male? Is there really a gender duality or is it more about conforming to the varying demands of the fictionalized drama? Also, why is it that some people conveniently see through her disguise but not others? Why does no one who could be dangerous to her see through it? And if, as she is told by her doctor at one point, that she is not the only woman living the way she is, that there is “nothing unusual” about her choice, why doesn’t she run into any of these other women? It feels that her secret is alternately urgently well-hidden or not so necessarily hidden depending on the circumstance, and the differences feel more contrived for plot than realistic consistency. A violent surfacing of adolescence (which has little in common with Tarkington's earlier, broadly comic, Seventeen) has a compulsive impact.

Whips – whether Tory, Labour or Lib Dem – have long inhabited a secret, often dark, world at Westminster, one that no one has ever seriously called into question. But now – just possibly – that could change. When wide-ranging inquiries were announced by home secretary Theresa May on Monday into allegations of child abuse in all corners of public life, including into unsubstantiated claims that a paedophile ring involving political figures operated around parliament in the 1980s, questions about the whips' role as guardians of deep and sometimes sinister information began, at last, to surface. As Lee and Charlotte grow, their relationship becomes fraught, both with Lee’s conflicted feelings toward his “sister,” and the perceptions of others about the nature of their closeness. Charlotte is much more innocent than Lee, and while she escapes most of the brutality that Lee suffers under the orphanage’s “improvements,” her persistent efforts to spend time playing games with the boys instead of learning the domestic arts eventually results in her banishment to the stables, where the headmistress is certain she will learn humility and a desire to be a “good” girl. Instead, Charlotte discovers her love of horses, and under the wise tutelage of the stable master, Jonas, she gains both skill and the protections of a father-figure, both of which become necessary once Lee’s mixed feelings become dangerous to her and she needs to fashion a life without social, financial, or family connections.

Pour off excess fat, turn heat down to medium and return the browned beef to the skillet or pot. Add salt, peppers, chile powder, turmeric, oregano and cumin, and stir to combine. Add steak sauce, Worcestershire sauce and diced tomatoes, and stir again. Cover the skillet or pot, and cook, stirring a few times, for 15 minutes or so. What did you take away from the book to perhaps inspire you to go after a secret dream you’ve hidden away?

The river or theme that runs through The Whip is the question regarding forgiveness… What would you do if someone destroyed the person you love most? Could you forgive them..? And if not, what would you do?But Emma Molinero, orphan daughter of an itinerant carnival performer, is beyond that kind of struggle. She is a woman whose fiery independence and skill at performing with the whips -- her father's only legacy -- make her a figure of mysterious but commanding fascination to the villagers among whom she lives.

Charley was the first woman to vote in America in 1868 (as a man). Her grave lies in Watsonville, California. THE WHIP is Miss Cookson's finest novel to date...a richly detailed, totally absorbing story that will surely add many new readers to the millions who are already devoted Catherine Cookson fans." (Publisher's Source) So whatever is the romantic story that seems to be the main reason of the book, for me it is the detailed description of life on a farm and the class relations in a little town that interested me in this book... stars. From the moment I started Whip I could not put it down. I could see Karen’s depth of research that she put into the development of her character. Truly a magnificent novel. I look forward to seeing the Whip as a film. The excellent audio version of this book takes a great story and raises it to the level of a captivating story. I really enjoyed this. They called him Whip because that was the way he handled a plane. Small, wiry, always ready for action, Captain Whip Russel was a terror in the air...and the pilots of his Brigade of B-25 bombers were the best outfit in the Pacific in 1942. Stars. Best book for me in 2014, I had so many Omg moments. It had abandonment love hate murder everything you can think of. The chapter’s are very short . A very easy read .Great book. I'm not usually a fan of historical fiction, but my mom recommended it and I thoroughly enjoyed this book! It was going to be a bracing autumn day. The leaves were glimmering in the early light; they’d been turning crisp in the cold nights and rattled now with the breeze. They were orange, gold, and red. In her old life she might have called it glorious. But now she knew the truth about all this beauty.'
