This delightful title won a silver medal at the 2004 Nestle Children's Book Prize (age 9-11 category) and has been shortlisted for the 2004 CILIP Carnegie Medal. I don't know how Ibbotson does it, but her storytelling can only be described as LOVELY and DELIGHTFUL.Annika is the protagonist of the story. A foundling, she is found and taken in by Sigrid and Ellie. She has a real talent for cooking, but she is very trusting. Two striking images, among so very many, stand out for me in this novel: one is of a Lipizzaner horse and its rider, working together as one, and the other is of an armoured fist sometimes accompanied by the motto, 'Stand aside, Ye Vermin Who Oppose Us'. And between the two uneasily sits the figure of 12-year-old foundling Annika who finds herself emotionally torn between the community which has raised her and the family she never knew she had. Rocco is a gentle, quarter-Lipizzaner breed bay-coloured horse belonging to Zed. Although the Master bought him originally for Hermann, he changed his mind and left Rocco to Zed shortly before having a stroke. Annika is asked by Loremarie Egghart, a snobby rich girl whom Annika despises, to read to her great-aunt. Annika does so and the two (Annika and Loremarie's great aunt) become friends, telling each other about their lives. Loremarie's great aunt was a famous theatre personality who went by the stage name La Rondine. They become so close that the great-aunt leaves Annika her jewels when she dies, having been told that the jewels are pastings of the real ones which she had sold through a jeweler.

Ibbotson, master of the “poor orphan makes good” tale, offers another eminently satisfying example, this one wrapped in a valentine to Vienna, the author’s natal city. Raised by servants to be “a person who was interested in doing things, not having them,” 11-or-so-year-old foundling Annika sees a dream come true when lovely, regal Edeltraut von Tannenberg appears at the door one day, joyously announcing that she’s her real mother. (Fiction. 10-13) It is about a little girl called Annika who was abandoned when she was a baby in an abandoned church. Two ladies, Ellie and Sigrid decide (after a nunnery says no to looking after her) to look after the baby and from then on lead a life filled with every emotion thinkable. From the vain Egghearts, whose child Loremarie taunts Annika continuously, to the lovely Zed, the gypsy, and the mysterious great-aunt of Loremarie, Annika's life is very complicated. Annika wants answers from people but as her life goes on Annika gets more questions than answers. I loved the adventure hidden beneath this book, I love Eva Ibbotson because of her imagination and creativity. At first I thought this book would have been pretty predictable but as I got nearer to the middle or the climax, it got more and more exciting.If I had to describe this book in three words they would be exciting, original and thought-provoking. All ages love it and I know this because both my mum and younger brother love this book as well as myself. It is a brilliant story to read and one of my all time favourite single stories.
