OUR AUTHOR AND ILLUSTRATOR DAVID LUCAS – Is a British author and illustrator, whose parents loved nature, something he took advantage of as a child getting outdoors as much as he could. He proclaims that he never really draws images from real life instead he feels he utilizes his imagination for every illustration, forming patterns and shapes as a part of his work. This fable-like tale, bursting with bright, winsome illustrations, is a fresh take on the timeless themes of friendship and second chances. A discarded robot offers a home to a cold bluebird. He finds his own value and worth, along with a new heart, by helping the bird migrate to a warm home. A sweet and touching story that students in Kindergarten and first grade will easily understand. A bit surreal in a very good way. Reminds me a bit of one of my favorites, esp. re' the art, Moon Man. Similar theme to Ferry's 'Scarecrow' but much better: more moving and plausible and subtle in its depths.

The lesson is based on direct instruction with the teacher modeling an example then discussing non-examples and then working with the children to complete an example together. At the end there is reminder of the steps to success and a diagnostic question yo help support your AFL. There was once a robot with a broken heart, good for nothing but expiring slowly on a scrap heap. Then one winter's day a migrating bluebird lands on his shoulder, too exhausted to go further. The robot offers her shelter in the place where his heart used to be, and her warmth and singing and companionship stir up the last glimmer of energy the robot has; he carries her across snowy wastes to the warm south, whereupon his strength dies out finally. And there he still stands today like an old hollow tree, home every year to singing birds. Maths -Create your own numberline (up to 10 or 20) using natural objects eg. 1 pine cone, 2 leaves.
