A very off-putting essay collection. I expected it to be very appealing and instead I got a revamp on how some authors are not happy with some people (who might not be happy with these authors in the first place). The important thing to remember about stupidity is it can get you fame, fortune, and high regard. Flutter one’s eyelids and frolic in meadows. Play the fool, and you shall be… [insert rhyme here]. Alright, we are all stupid. If you think that you're by far smarter and intelligent than your next door neighbour or the colleague in the next cubicle, a stupid brain has concocted that thought for you. It's the stupidity alarm ringing. The work notes there isn’t a huge amount of research into the nature of human stupidity, which this book set out to correct.

For liberal, lefty, woke, snowflakes such as ourselves, there’s a limit to the level of tolerance liberal values will allow.

Onze hersenen bestaan feitelijk uit twee hersenhelften die niettemin verbonden zijn. Toch komen deze twee valse tweelingbroertjes in niets overeen.” In a different year, I might object to foreign writers so frequently using the American president as an example of so many different ideas about stupidity, but in this year... Mr. President, if you don't want to be featured prominently in a book about the psychology of stupidity, maybe you should have made an effort to be a less obvious example. Our mission is to foster a universal passion for reading by partnering with authors to help create stories and communicate ideas that inform, entertain, and inspire. There are some fools who find it impossible to sleep when they are passengers; apparently they can sleep only when they’re the driver!

a type of discourse and thought in which nobody tries anymore to find out if what’s being said is true, all that counts is the effect it produces.” We are unaware of most of the biases that affect our reception of information, and of the propensities that sway our reasoning." While I think the intent of this book was not to be an academic read or to inspire radical new theories regarding psychology, rather to showcase how we all are capable of stupidity which does not mean we are stupid but rather that we have some work to do on how we think and reason with the world around us. In a way, words that free themselves from their referents and proper meanings escape the ordinary confines of language. But a word is always a problematic entity: its meaning is open, and can be the object of negotiation between two interlocutors"

At last, stupidity explained! And by some of the world’s smartest people, among them Daniel Kahneman, Dan Ariely, Alison Gopnik, Howard Gardner, Antonio Damasio, Aaron James and Ryan Holiday. The book is really just strange, quite madly incoherent, and sometimes quite uncomfortable to read because of its abusive tone. Furthermore, some of the contributions get things wrong on occasion, for example in how they reinforce common misunderstandings of psychological research (such as the Dunning-Kruger effect), and then, the book is internally inconsistent in that other contributions get those same things right. Self-awareness is certainly one of the biggest steps anyone can take to at least appear intelligent. Being considerate an example of this.

Somehow, inexplicably, it feels as though intelligent people are becoming more intelligent and those who we would deem as dumb are becoming dumber, which is often dependent on what you dedicate your time to doing. But the truth is everyone is capable of lapses in judgement and I'm sure everyone, at some point, has made a major fool out of themselves. That may be just my perception of it but it certainly seems to match reality. This is a collection of engaging, fascinating and accessible essays from a variety of psychologist academics and educators which discuss anecdotes and statistics related to the scientific study of stupidity. Stalin appears to have been not only a genocidal maniac, but also an asshole in every sphere. (c) Oh, really, on what sources? Oh well. It’s a controversial one, as so few are willing to admit they’re stupid. Welcome to Professional Moron, sah! Believing British society would collapse into a communist state should the monarchy system be abolished (and using China as an example to support the argument)

dominate, or escape, the stupidity that constitutes everything that is human”, wrote Matthijs Van Boxsel.
