If, like me, you were disappointed with Baby Teeth look no further than THE LIES WE TOLD! We have another Hanna, but in this novel, she is truly a frightening, dangerous child--so much more realistic. Great, My." I could hear the grin in his voice. "Let's stay up late tonight and talk until dawn, okay?" A] tale of twisted narratives fueled by obsession…[a] tense psychological thriller.”— Washington Times I didn’t want to touch my little bird’s head, could hardly bear to look at the thin brown line of congealed blood where it had been sliced clean from the body, or at the half-open, staring eyes. I wondered if she’d been alive or dead when it happened, and started to feel

She handles her dual narrative deftly, meting out well-paced details that create and develop tension as readers puzzle out the ties between Beth’s story about Hannah and Clara’s investigation of Luke’s disappearance. BAM! Finally a thriller that hit me right in the face, making me incredible happy to be pummeled by surprise after surprise. The POVs were absolutely perfect. In the beginning you had no idea who the mother was, and that made you pay very close attention to everything that was revealed. It wasn’t just that, though. The sociopathic child really made the hairs standing up on end. I felt chilled and unsettled and it was absolutely delicious. I needed to know where it all would end, and how the author would tie the different threads together. And boy, she delivered with an unique, believable and satisfying solution. The characters were also very well crafted. They felt like real, complex people. And the ending (after we knew all the secrets) left me wanting more! This book had so many things that I love in a psychological thriller. First off, a true sociopath, one that is so incredibly anti-social and inherently evil that she can’t be ignored. Secondly a host of other characters, well described, that I felt I cared about and wanted to see how this would all play out. While reading Camilla Way's latest thriller, I couldn't get the above lyric out of my head, along with "Lies lies lies yeah" from The Thompson Twins' Lies. As you might expect from a book with this title, there are lots of twists and turns and times where you have no idea whom you should believe. It makes for quite a read!

In 1986, Beth begins to worry about her young daughter, Hannah. She and her husband had tried for years to have a baby, and Hannah's arrival was truly a blessing. But for some reason, Hannah isn't quite as loving as other children—as she grows older, it appears she almost takes pleasure in causing people pain and worry. Should she actually be afraid of her daughter, or is she overreacting? Maya and Rebecca Ward are both accomplished physicians, but that’s where the sisters’ similarities end. As teenagers, they witnessed their parents’ murder, but it was Rebecca who saved Maya from becoming another of the gunman’s victims. The tragedy left Maya cautious and timid, settling for a sedate medical practice with her husband, Adam, while Rebecca became the risk taker. Chauncey leaned against my leg and I rested my hand on top of his broad head. I thought of walking home very slowly, but my feet were glued to the road. There it was again. The sly, sneaky fist. They now have a young son, Toby, and Beth lives in fear that Hannah will do something terrible to her brother, she has already been caught pinching and teasing him. Hannah has also convinced her father that it is her mother who is too hard on her, that she isn’t doing the things that Beth has described. This family is in trouble, but what will happen to them? The Lies We Told is a story that you you must go in blind. I may have even told you too much, but I'm promising you that it's worth it. The mystery behind Luke's disappearance was cleverly written, with minor red herrings along with way, but nevertheless strong and convincing. It's rather difficult to stump me with new thriller-mysteries because the genre is so over-saturated, but The Lies We Told is here to slay!Compulsive, chilling, twisted—my first experience with Camilla Way’s writing blew my mind!! I must admit that for the first 75% of this novel, I had no idea what to make of anything or who to trust in the best possible way. I am firm believer that a good thriller should make me feel unsettled. I should question everything like the characters do. I should trust the wrong person. I should know something is about to happen but not be sure what it is or who is behind it. This novel had me experiencing all of these feelings! I am a thriller-lover, and this one is right up there among my top reads this year! I loved the two timelines, I think it made it even more exciting, especially when the past and the present met. However, there is also a lot of unnecessary information that impacts the pace. Excessive detail and repetitive descriptions of places and feelings start to get a bit old toward the second half of the narrative’s third act. It’s not bad enough to detract from the overall quality of the novel, but it’s present enough to be a bit of a nuisance at times. Another element of The Lies We Told that merits attention is the way it sometimes slides away from being a psychological thriller and dips its toes into the realm of horror. Hannah is the quintessential creepy child in horror narratives. There is one incident her mother remembers that serves as a perfect example. When Hannah was 12, a new neighbor came to the house to introduce herself. When she left, Beth said goodbye to her at the door and turned to find Hannah standing on the stairs, watching them intently. Later, she went to her room:

THE LIES WE TOLD: The exciting new psychological thriller

I read Camilla Ways, Watching Edie, and enjoyed it very much so I was thrilled to get my hands on a copy of this one and it did not disappoint. While I suspected some of what was happening I will say that the very last twist really dropped my jaw..I hadn't expected that at all and isn't that why we're all so addicted to these psych thrillers? Yes, yes it is! This book aims to equip Christians to navigate the minefield of current claims. To understand our inherent human significance, to know genuine freedom, and to work for real justice, we need to know the truth. When Clara's boyfriend, Luke, disappears, everyone believes that he's left her, but Clara thinks she knows the truth. Recent evidence suggests that Luke had a stalker, and Clara worries that he's been kidnapped. Then Luke's older sister, Emily, who vanished twenty years ago, suddenly reappears. The mysterious tone reminds me of Fiona Barton's The Child but I like this story so much more. One of my favorites this year! In “The Lies We Told,” author Camilla Way twines two stories into a double helix, twisting them seamlessly around each other so that we know they really form one tale, but for long enough cannot quite see how they will eventually merge. The plot started of good with the plane crash , but unfortunately after that it went downhill and became tedious. Maybe I’m losing my touch? No chance – it’s just that good. Very curious to see how well you all do!! The secrets and lies are astonishing. . . One of the best ever written by this prolific author. If you read one contemporary novel this summer, make it this one and I promise you will not be disappointed.” I was a huge fan of Watching Edie (definitely recommend!) and was thrilled to hear that Camilla Way was coming out with a new book. A big thank you to Berkley for my copy of this book. Every so often you start a book and you just know it is going to be one of the few that stand out from the rest. That is how this was for me. There were two really suspense filled stories going on with alternating chapters. Clara and her boyfriend Luke had recently moved into together and suddenly Luke goes missing. Little by little Clara finds out some disturbing information regarding Luke. Did Luke leave on his own accord or has he met a deadly fate?

Goodness I don’t know what took me so long to read this book! It was full of twists and turns and kept me guessing. It is definitely one of the what’s done in the dark will come to light type of books The Lies We Told is a novel that contains so much, giving only one of its secrets away would spoil much of it—which makes discussion difficult. That being said, there are some elements that work very well and make this a recommended read. This book was surprising as hell. I've read a lot of thrillers and I thought I had this one figured out, I made several predictions and I was wrong every time. I was so addicted to this story and the writing I found it very hard to put down. I felt so much for Beth and her struggles with her daughter and feeling so hopeless with trying to get help for her. I also was captivated by the mystery of Luke's disappearance and trying to figure out what happened. What an excellent dilemma this book poses! Two sisters, one married one not. The married sister comes up missing, presumed dead. Living sister falls in love with her brother-in-law, only to find the suspected dead sister. How do you return from all of that? How do you go on? This book poses all of those questions and more! Leavings you thinking about decisions and consequences long after finishing the book!

The first is the emotional anguish. Luke’s disappearance affects all those who knew him. Even after his dirty secrets are aired and his flaws are exposed, there is a part of the reader that still hopes he is okay, mainly because of the pain of those suffering due to his disappearance. Also, the way the author manages to keep the big reveal under wraps for three quarters of the narrative—not to mention the fact that the novel doesn’t end right after the big reveal—says a lot about the amount of time and attention to detail that went into creating the plot. T]he construction and pacing are solid, staying just far enough ahead of the reader to be fun, and offering, in the last quarter, a buffet table of twists.”— New York Times Book Review After Maya is prodded by husband Adam and Rebecca to help with a relief aid group, her helicopter crashes and she vanishes. Both Adam and Rebecca fear she's dead, but in reality she is stranded on a tiny island with three bizarre people living on it. In the meantime, Adam and Rebecca are drawn together and fighting their attraction for each other. Emma, Luke’s older sister, who also vanished, but twenty years earlier, is now present and attempting to help Clara find Luke. She won’t tell anyone where she’s been or even what happened.
