The idea is often put forward that women were deliberately “written out of history” but many books dealing with Cumman na mBan have been published since the 1960s

WILLIE Carlin was one of the key agents inside the Irish republican movement working for British intelligence. Carlin, from Derry, was a mole inside Sinn Fein providing intelligence to MI5. He became close to leading republican Martin McGuinness.

Historic, cultural and family ties with Ireland were key to Scotland acting as a support base for both the IRA and loyalist paramilitaries during the Troubles. Below are a few books, both fiction and nonfiction, that dive into the history of this conflict, particularly in the latter half of the 20th century. While it’s a small starting point, having some understanding of the history of the area will provide a context to understanding current events. Hamill, Heather (2010). The Hoods: Crime and Punishment in Belfast: Crime and Punishment in West Belfast. Princeton University Press. ISBN 978-0691119632. One of my fascinations with Northern Ireland in the 1970s and 80s is how it became a place where different rules applied, where reality itself seemed up for grabs. Nowhere was this more the case than the “Provisional Republic” of South Armagh, AKA Bandit Country, with its handmade “sniper at work” signs and its community militias all surveyed by the watchtowers and helicopters of the British army. Toby Harnden’s book is a compulsively fascinating tour of this alternative universe. For a detailed breakdown of casualties caused by and inflicted on the IRA, see Provisional IRA campaign 1969-1997 §Casualties. Memorial to members of the IRA's Derry Brigade Sutton, Malcolm. "Sutton Index of Deaths: Status of the person killed". Conflict Archive on the Internet . Retrieved 7 June 2020.

One of the women arrested last summer was described at her bail hearing as a grandmother with a clear record who “ should be given the benefit of the doubt.” The prosecutor disagreed, calling her not a grandmother but “a dedicated terrorist.” It’s our job now to try to understand how a woman might be both. When the resolution failed to achieve the necessary two-thirds majority to change Sinn Féin policy the leadership announced a resolution recognising the "Official" Army Council, which would only require a simple majority vote to pass. [50] At this point Seán Mac Stíofáin led the walkout after declaring allegiance to the "Provisional" Army Council. [50] In 1992 Colonel Gaddafi is understood to have given the British government a detailed inventory of weapons he'd supplied to the IRA. [212] Nevertheless, its production license was sold to companies in Japan and England. The Irish loved the ARs so much they even wrote songs about them. Belfast ran itself for years on its [social] clubs. You know the clubs? They formed the clubs, earlier on they formed it and ... the car parks, you know, not building them but taking over areas and running them as car parks. There was no one to say how much you took in and how much you took out and so, you know, if there was twenty-thousand coming in every week you could say there's twelve-thousand coming in and then there's eight-thousand going one way, and you paid your people and say there's so much going every week. And that financed the movement. [379]
