About this deal

Caldwell-Wood, N.. & Mitten, L.A. (June 1991). "I" is not for Indian: The portrayal of Native Americans in books for young people. Paper presented at the meeting of the American Library Association, Atlanta, GA. This is not just a simple children's story. It holds important lessons about how we treat our fellow human beings, though the message is somewhat undermined by its clumsy racial stereotypes. "Life Lessons, via Indians". Los Angeles Times . Retrieved October 10, 2020.

Lynne Reid Banks is a best-selling author for children and adults. Her classic children's novel, The Indian in the Cupboard, has sold over ten million copies worldwide and was made into a highly successful feature film. Omri believes that the final bundle must contain the missing earrings, but in fact, it contains another tiny person, fast asleep. Before he can investigate further, he is called to Tom's home. Tom has fallen from the roof and is on the verge of death, but asked for Omri to tell him the final secret: before she died, Jessica had him search for a plastic figure of herself. He bought dozens of figurines before finally finding the right one. Jessica kept the figure of herself but told him to take care of the other plastic figures, saying, "This is me, but everyone is someone." Boone and Ruby Lou realize they are stranded as tiny people in the far future, unable to return home without the key. They attempt to make a life with one another, eventually confessing their love. They are resigned to their fate, but long to return home and be properly married. The dialects of the characters were written perfectly, and it really brings the characters to life, making the story feel authentic. We used the audio along with the physical books a few times throughout, and the narrator did a nice job with it. There are a few strange pronunciations of words. Lynne, Reid Banks (2003). There are a few racial slurs from a cowboy character, and a few casual drops of the term 'Red Indian.' But those are kind of the point. This story shows Little Bull as brave, shrewd, caring, and most of all human. It shows the reader (as it showed me when I was young) that the slurs are from stupidity or fear. It helped me see these words should not define the people they're directed at, but rather the people they issue from.

As an adult, I'm incredibly uncomfortable with the basic errors (false and negative stereotypes) in this book. Looking at it 30 years after it was first published (and after finishing a nonfiction book about the first Americans), I certainly see it as inappropriate and dated. I'm not just trying to be "politically correct" although that is a term that could be applied to me I suppose. It's somewhat disturbing to read the inaccuracies and the inherent racism in the boys comments...and in the author's suggestions from those comments. At first, Omri is unimpressed with the plastic Indian toy he is given for his birthday. But when he puts it in his old cupboard and turns the key, something extraordinary happens that will change Omri's life for ever.
