A few interesting essays but also a lot of less interesting ones. Despite containing authors from around the world, the collection seemed less diverse because it became repetitive in the later sections, and most of the authors were much older and considered life from similar specific viewpoint. Keep collections to yourself or inspire other shoppers! Keep in mind that anyone can view public collections - they may also appear in recommendations and other places. The words in this anthology mean home. Whether this idea is conveyed by poetry from voices like Natasha Trethewey or Jane Hirschfield, or prose from authors like Tony Birch or Angie Cruz, the result is beautiful and transporting.

A hearth is many things: a place for solitude; a source of identity; something we make and share with others; a history of ourselves and our homes. It is the fixed center we return to. It is just as intrinsically portable. It is, in short, the perfect metaphor for what we seek in these complex and contradictory times—set in flux by climate change, mass immigration, the refugee crisis, and the dislocating effects of technology. Doyle compliments the quantity of minute detail giving the feeling of daily life in the 1500s, from a clean Dutch home to a slovenly medieval German Inn to conflicted pre-Renaissance Rome. He incidentally mentions clothing, hobbies, morals, attitudes, and popular outlook at the end of the Middle Ages. On the downside he mentionsWe can consider our relationships with one another, and not only with people but with minerals, plants, animals and the entire cosmos as we are all relative to each other. The Cloister and the Hearth" is Charles Reade's greatest work—and, I believe, the greatest historical novel in the language… there is portrayed so vigorous, lifelike, and truthful a picture of a time long gone by, and differing in almost every particular from own, that the world has never seen its like. To me it is a picture of the past more faithful than anything in the works of Scott. [4]
