The Growing Story by Ruth Krauss, Helen Oxenbury - Waterstones

A talented team ingeniously up-ends the classic tale of the three little pigs, and the laugh-out-loud results begin with the opening illustration--a mother wolf lounges in bed, her hair in curlers Continue reading » I think the way this story is written using lots of repetition and constantly relating to the seasons and nature changing shows the reader that the little boy is growing as everything is changing however, you feel a sense of sympathy in case he isn’t! Recommended for a present (especially if you haven't seen the child for a long time and can make a relevant haven't you grown??! comment) or to borrow from a library. Beautifully produced, written and illustrated, this is a classic work for any age at any period.' The Independent on Sunday First of all I think Krauss and Oxenbury have produced a lovely story as well as very detailed and colourful illustrations! It's a nice story, one that pretty much everybody would call charming, and what I liked most about it was the way it showed the rhythm of the changing seasons (though no winter made appearance). The existence of the Boy and his Mother had a timeless quality (despite all this growing going on), brought out by the internal rhythms of the text. Helen Oxenbury's illustrations emphasise this timeless character. They are subtle, gentle and pretty in a cottage garden kind of way (but not actually twee, I hasten to add), with a hint of haze that nostalgia tends to give to older adults' memories of childhood. longer, shorter, short, too short, too tight, faster, slower, high, higher, as high as, big, little, taller, warm, warmer, colder Skittish, curious, loving, and vividly adorable, Henry’s new puppy, Charley, epitomizes the idea that while being a fledging pet owner isn’t always easy, it’s entirely worthwhile. Charley is a bit Continue reading » If Zwerger's Alice (reviewed above) is deliciously cryptic, Oxenbury's (Tom and Pippo books) brims with the fun and frights of a visit to an amusement park. In perhaps her most ambitious work to Continue reading »

The cover is a spoiler, so don't show it to your kids (at least of the original version, available on OpenLibrary.org). Controlled vocabulary, rhythm, patterns, and illustrations that tell more than the text... this is a wonderful little book by a poet who interviewed and respected children. Jane Dyer brings her tender touch to a bedtime book by Ruth Krauss in Goodnight Goodnight Sleepyhead, which pairs text from Krauss's 1964 Eyes Nose Fingers Toes with Dyer's characteristically Continue reading » One by one a host of animals offer ingredients when a child decides to bake a birthday cake. PW called the story ""perfectly paced"" and said that the ""understated"" watercolors ""shine with the Continue reading » The topic may be confined to human growth, with links to healthy eating and healthy practices, but can also easily extend to animal, insect, plant and underwater or undersea growth. An interesting extension I have used in the past is to look at cave growth – stalagmites, stalactites and the unique plants and fungi found in this environment. It can help to show the infinite variety of life (and life requirements) on the planet – although these aspects might be a bit much for some children. You will need to pitch your coverage to the children with whom you are currently working. The child worries that he has not grown bigger, but when the cool weather comes again and he retrieves his stored winter clothes he is filled with delight and surprise.A baby boy is showered with love during a family party. ""In this exuberant picture book.... Vibrant gouache paintings capture all the warmth of this close-knit group,"" said PW in a starred review. The Growing Story by Ruth Krauss - Publishers Weekly The Growing Story by Ruth Krauss - Publishers Weekly

New art reinterprets a text originally published as The Bundle Book in 1951. The illustrations may be on the sugary side, said PW, but the playful affection between mother and child shines through Continue reading » Familiar characters and stories return in new editions. Well suited to a 3-D adventure, The Three Little Wolves and the Big Bad Pig: Pop-up Edition by Eugene Trivizas, illus. by Helen Oxenbury, Continue reading » What happens in the winter that is different from the summer? How do you know when the summer is over? How do you know when winter starts? Sometimes children need to wait for proof that they have grown. This is especially hard to notice when rest of the world is growing so fast before their eyes. Growing’ is always a useful topic for children in the Foundation Stage because it can be firmly rooted in the children and their various experiences. Some of these experiences (such as losing teeth - although not common at this age, I have known it to happen, and they may have older siblings) might trouble them, so this topic can provide reassurance. It can also facilitate a development of understanding that change occurs through life and in the wider world, to whatever degree is appropriate for the children in your charge. Now in its second season, HarperCollins's reissue of 22 Sendak classics continues. This time, his collaborations with Ruth Krauss take center stage. In Charlotte and the White Horse, first Continue reading » Good book for the end of the day or in conjunction with seasons and growth of plants and animals etc. Oxenbury’s illustrations depict this gently story so well. A little boy observes everything growing, the grass, the animals… He wonders if he’ll grow. The weather gets hot. Clothes get stored. The trees are changing. As the weather changes again, his growth is evidenced in the stored clothes not fitting. The boy is so happy to be growing. Armistice Day: A Collection of Remembrance - Spark Interest and Educate Children about Historical Moments I also liked that it was realised from what seemed like both the eye level and the psychological perspective of the child: thus no humans other than Mother appear in the story.
