At home, she writes cathartic letters to her brother, never posting them but instead placing them in her wardrobe, where they vanish overnight. One day Iris receives a reply, which, along with other events, pushes her to make dramatic life decisions. Magic plays a quiet role in this story, and readers may for a time forget there is anything supernatural going on. This is more of a wartime tale of broken families, inspired youths, and higher powers using people as pawns. It flirts with clichéd tropes but also takes some startling turns. Main characters are assumed White; same-sex marriages and gender equality at the warfront appear to be the norm in this world.

If you enjoy well written adventure including danger and magic with oodles of sweet romance and wonderful characters then this is the perfect read for you.The Bone Spindle is an incredible YA fantasy debut from Leslie Vedder who delivers a smoothly confident and finely polished gender-flipped fairytale retelling." Traditional, fairy-tale gender roles are reversed, so the sleeping beauty is male and his rescuers are female. All characters read as White, though there are a few brief mentions of tan or darker skin. Shane has always been attracted to women and falls in love with one in this story. Same-sex and bisexual attraction and relationships are standard in this fantasy world. The book starts with Shane offering Fi a piece of the latest treasure she wants to chase. It’s in an old ruin that is bound to have magic and traps which need navigating and she can use Fi’s help. What I loved: a retelling of Sleeping Beauty with flipped gender roles. The prince needs to be rescued and the women are the heroes. I also love that the sleeping prince has magic and can project himself, which allows him to be more than a sleeping, passive character. The speed of the book was perfect. It's set up for another book to follow, and it makes sense.

(I am basically the lesbian on the boat who crossed the ocean for her romance , but with their romance.) Filore is a bookish treasure hunter who is good with riddles, curses and lore. Shane is great with an axe and is trained in combat. Together they make the perfect treasure hunting duo.
