About this deal

I continue to read but the interview never comes, just a history of the killer and what he did (I could find this on Wikipedia) and the authors opinions. One of the main things which I found really annoying, is how the author constantly refers to previous books he has written. I get he is trying to tell the reader that if you found this interesting, you might want to read my other book where I mentioned it too but it comes across as repetitive self promotion. Yet in the course of these conversations, the author also had the chance to interview his subjects' psychiatrists and, in doing so, uncovered a terrible truth: a monster can be hidden behind a friendly face. Some of these experts, he found, proved to have more in common with their patients than he would ever have expected.

There’s no interviews with any criminals in this book at all. All the author ever states about mass murderers or spree killers is who they are and how many people they killed. Also, I don’t need to know that much detail about the guns used? Like, it’s really boring to try and read through what velocity the bullets would fire at from a certain range? The repetition drove me NUTS. He repeatedly alluded to his “restricted word count” in this novel, and constantly referred to the vast number of serial killers and psychopaths he has interviewed over the years.... “more than Stephen King can even imagine”, in fact!! I think he underestimates Mr King. The way he speaks about women also got under my skin, he describes one “hooker” who had “more tattoos than a fairground worker”. Every other woman is “vivacious”. I loathe that adjective. I also felt that he handled mental health issues and psychopathy itself quite insensitively.I wasn't expecting to love this book as much as I did. But Christopher Berry-Dee has such a relatable way of writing, and I really felt I was inside his mind and sitting having a chat with him. Firstly; this book title is incorrect. Never in this book do we ever get to “Talk WITH Psychopaths” etc. This book should be called “Aimlessly Talking ABOUT” because that’s all you’ll read.

Beyond Evil is an eye-opening examination of the evil actions some will do to others while managing to pass as an ordinary person on the outside. Most of all, it highlights the problem of identifying psychopaths who kill, which I think is always a fascinating conversation. How do you know somebody is evil? How do you know who is telling the truth?I did find the cases interesting. There were some that I was not aware of before, which I learnt about by reading this book. Barely scratches the surface of the cases looked at, there is no "deeper journey". All that is in this book, you can find on Wikipedia and YouTube; as the author mentions himself several times.
