About this deal

While waiting for the Tottenham first-team squad to hopefully get through the international break without injury, I am taking time out to revisit what was arguably the most astonishing of all the games that graced the Lane............ This match was a rehearsal for the Champions League Final and City were looking for a win to seal their fifth Premier League title and their third title in four years. Pep Guardiola made no less than 9 changes from the midweek Champions League semi-final tie. Ederson and Ruben Dias were the only surviving starters. Chelsea made five changes from their midweek success and included midfielder Billy Gilmour. Reece James, Alonso, Ziyech and Pulisic also started. Perhaps it wasn't so much of a rehearsal after all.

Norman Giller truly excelled with this detailed account of Peter McWilliam, who led us to FA Cup victory in 1921. Norman also found space to detail the scandal of Arsenal securing a First Division place when the Football League resumed after the Great War. You might not have read this tale in such detail before! Sterling wanted a penalty when he got ahead of Zouma in the area, but VAR supported Mr. Taylor's "no penalty" decision. Alonso had a chance at the other end, but his shot was wide. Alonso did have a goal in added time when Hudson-Odoi fed the ball forward to Werner on the right. The German crossed and Alonso lifted a shot beyond Ederson into the City net to ensure there would be no title celebrations yet. Having closed one weekend of Premier League action, we open the next with a Friday night game at Selhurst Park. We beat Palace 4-0 away last January and Palace lost 4-0 at Newcastle on Saturday. We must have a great chance to extend our lead at the top of the 10-game table. Norman Giller concludes his brilliant series on Spurs' managers with a unique insight on the greatest of them all - Bill Nicholson......Villa were unchanged after their win against Everton. Dean Henderson was in goal for a strong United team. De Gea had played in the midweek Europa League semi-final which United won on aggregate against Mourinho's next assignment Roma. United started strongly and both Shaw and Pogba had shots saved by Martinez inside the first 6 minutes. Fred also had a shot on target but hit straight at the keeper in the early phase. Villa won a couple of corners, but Henderson had yet to be stretched.

Champs league went out of the window weeks ago. Only the pundits for whatever reason seem to think we have a faint chance, we've had no chance for weeks, we had moments but looked slow and lethargic, the new manager has a massive task, squad is tired and in urgent need of replenishment, identified by Pochettino even before the CL final and that was 2 years ago! Slightly unfair to single out individuals but you have to ask why Eric Dier plays? He makes the same mistakes game after game, awful" Here is the latest selection of items chosen from the Spurs Odyssey archive relating to events "On this day":- Norman's articles offer a deep insight into current affairs at Tottenham, and a unique inside view on our illustrious history. West Brom finally had their relegation confirmed with this defeat, which also gave Sam Allardyce his unenviable first Premier League relegation as a manager. “The Baggies” have now been relegated from the Premier League as many times as Norwich, who will return as Championship winners. There were four twitchy minutes of added time for Steve Bruce and his men. In the first of these, Perez had a close range shot following Thomas's short ball inside the area. Dubravka made a brilliant close-range reaction save. That was the last of Leicester’s chances. Spurs Odyssey was saddened to hear of the passing of another Spurs Legend - Ron Burgess - yesterday on February 14th 2005. On this date in 1958, Spurs signed the great Cliff Jones from Swansea, when Ron Burgess was the manager. Ron Burgess died at the great age of 87 years, and Captained the great Championship winning sides from 1949-51, when Spurs won the old Second and First Divisions in successive seasons. He can also claim the credit for discovering Pat Jennings, as regular correspondent Brian Judson writes:- Every Spurs match is covered with excellent threads, which feature images and stats from previous games. There is so much to enjoy about the message board which also has an off-topic section where non-football matters are discussed.

Spurs Odyssey - Statistics

This was a do or die night really for a Fulham side who started the game 9 points behind Burnley, who were fourth from bottom. The game was preceded by silence for former Fulham midfielder Alan Slough who recently passed away. Slough was a member of the 1975 Fulham team which reached the FA Cup Final. That side included Bobby Moore and Alan Mullery.Attractive and clever as Spurs' football could be, sometimes, simpler passes might have been more beneficial. A powerful drive by Hojbjerg from some 28 yards was held by Leno. Richarlison (playing on the left) and Maddison had been involved in good build-up play. There were 43 years and 308 days between the ages of Tottenham Hotspur's Ryan Mason and Crystal Palace boss Roy Hodgson when they met on the touchline in our home game in May, the biggest gap between two managers facing off in Premier League history. So much has been and will be written about Jimmy Greaves, who was my first and last favourite footballer and sporting icon. Jimmy has suffered since his severe stroke 6 years ago, and will be missed by so many. It is so poignant that the news of Jimmy's passing comes on the day we play Chelsea, with whom his career began. Indeed, he scored against Spurs on his debut.

Last season we saw him three times, losing two and winning just one game. That win was the 1-0 home win against Manchester City. The last time Mr. Madley refereed Crystal Palace was when they lost 3-0 at home on Boxing Day to Fulham. Palace had two players sent off that day.
