About this deal

There are plenty of other highlights: the A7S III can receive an analogue and digital input from its hot-shoe mount, capture 16-bit raw over HDMI when recording at 4K/60p for the first time, and it features a 9.44MP viewfinder – proving that photographers haven't been entirely forgotten about. Build and handling

Priced comparably to CFast cards, these CFexpress cards (which deliver 800MB/s read and 700MB/s write speeds) are beauties. Thanks to the A7S III's dual-format card slots, though, you can also use SDXC V60 cards. That means two memory cards at any given time in the camera, and you can mix and match depending on what you have. You only really need the ultra high-speed CFExpress cards for Sony’s S&Q recording format at 4K resolution. BUT same SPECed OIS lenses are larger and expensive than lens without OIS, and the extra cost will be added up fast as we buy more and more OIS lenses. It is system camera, not P&S like RX1, RX10, RX100 lines. If you want more specific advice, then you'll need to either narrow down your interests to be more specific, or tell us which focal lengths you're most interested in shooting. Both the original Sony A7 and the later A7 Mark II score very well for dynamic range, beating the far newer Canon EOS RP and also showing the Nikon D750 a clean pair of heels. Even now, the Sony A7's results are good, and the A7 Mark II's are even better. Performance

Sony designs the circuitry of the processor in-house, and outsources the manufacturing to semiconductor foundries such as MegaChips and (mostly) GlobalFoundries, as they currently do not own any fabrication plant capable of producing a system on a chip (SoC).[1] Sony also sources DRAM chips from various manufacturers namely Samsung, SK Hynix and Micron Technology. Battery life is, again, solid rather than spectacular. The official CIPA rating is 520 shots per charge (when using the electronic viewfinder). While that's actually a 15% drop from the Sony A7 III, we found that estimate to be a little conservative and it can shoot 4K video for around two hours. In our tests, it managed to shoot 4K/60p for two hours and 20 minutes with no overheating, and a few minutes longer in 4K/24p mode before the battery died. Sony A7 IV review: image and video quality Remember though that with any given f-stop prime, the light per unit area is the same, so the a7S' pixels shouldn't be any more prone to saturate than the a6000's. As long as the FWC/pixel size ratio remains the same between the two cameras. That sensor resolution means the A7S III can’t record 6K video, let alone 8K, instantly putting it behind the Canon EOS R5 on that front. What it can do, however, is record for a very long time. As with the Sony ZV-1, we had no issues recording for in excess of 30 minutes, with the only limiting factors being the card capacity, battery life and heat – and the fact that we never experienced any overheating warnings or issues on the pre-production A7S III we tested bodes well for the final retail unit. Still, while the Canon EOS R6 is likely a better choice if you spend a lot of time holding down the shutter and shooting speeding objects, the A7 IV is still more than good enough for wildlife shooting.

http://www.dxomark.com/Cameras/Compare/Side-by-side/Sony-A7S-versus-Nikon-Df-versus-Canon-EOS-6D___949_925_836 While the specification improvements might not seem dramatic to some, the handling of the A7IV is dramatically enhanced. For a start, the electronic viewfinder has a nice boost in resolution as it’s a 3.69-million-dot unit rather than a 2.36-million-dot device, and it has a refresh rate of up to 120fps. If you’re keen to get more resolution then the A7R V is the best choice and its AF system is incredible. If video is your primary concern then go for the Sony A7S III. Having a higher dynamic range above iso 400 over every other camera ever manufactured is an absolute useless feature. What is your exact method for determining ISO 400, or 3200, as 'native ISO'? Method, math, equations, observations, whatever, anything. This isn’t a camera you’d buy for sports photography, either. It’s maximum 5fps continuous shooting speed is pedestrian enough, but if you want continuous AF, it drops to 2.5fps. The older A7R III has a more attractive price point however that does come with a few compromises. The A7R III has a reduced resolution compared to the A7R IVA, although at 44MP that is still no ill-store.

The issue of ISO is not a trivial one and it seems that when it comes to the 7S there are some questions lingering. Would be nice to have access to Sony technical data on this sensor. At the end, the A7s is a stunning camera for portrait, landscape, low light scenes, but you end up with to many missed pictures because of the batteries. If you can manage having three or four batteries constantly ready for use, then enjoy the fantastic image quality. Must be some kind of inverted snobbishness at work here, an "exclusive" camera for artists perhaps? This camera uselessly allows me to shoot at f4 or smaller in terrible low light conditions. Hate having that autofocus in low light as well. who needs it?

I don't know the exact methods delineated by the ISO Standard to determined ISO properly but one that reflects efficient photon collection is a good start although not strictly scientific. The Sony A7 is typically offered for sale body-only or with the low-cost Sony 28-70mm f/3.5-5.6 kit lens. (Image credit: Sony) Verdict The pitch with Sony’s A7 III is that it utilises the same AF advancements as in its maker’s A9 model, enabling it to accurately capture unpredictable moving subjects, such as dancers and wildlife. With images captured at sensitivities between ISO 2000-4000 looking like they were shot nearer 200-400, the A7S III is a liberating camera to use, and, naturally, you can boost the ISO much higher. Even when we set the ISO in excess of 40,000, it still produced usable footage for certain types of video. What is the point of a fusion of stills and vid if we can't do both at the same time? We are increasingly asked to do this by our customers/users. I recently considered to add to my cameras collection a mirrorless but I could not find out how you can keep your lens wide open while setting a small diaphragm. In other words, when I work in studio, I do not want to preview the exposure but set the exposure for the flashes, to say f11 while having a bright image on the screen with the modelling lights. Can all mirrorless do that? which ones do? Even so, there’s a reasonably chunky grip which makes the body comfortable to hold for long periods of time. The design of the camera is a little boxy, which will be appreciated by some, but perhaps not by others. While it doesn’t have the retro gorgeousness of a Fujifilm model, there’s a certain simplistic appeal. For me i can live with that slight loss of DR from iso 100-400 as the DR is still far better then my Canon 5D3.
